HOST: Earlier this year, hundreds of injured Veterans gathered in Snowmass Village, Colorado,
to take part in the 24th Annual "National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic."
VOICEOVER: "Co-sponsored by V-A and Disabled American Veterans, the Winter Sports Clinic
is a weeklong event offering Veterans instruction on adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing ā
along with a variety of other adaptive recreational activities."
First time participants teamed up with more seasoned competitors to push their limits
ā- and build their confidence. TREY LAFITTE: "Mainly just to get on top of
a mountain and jump, and go down it really fast. That's what Iām looking forward to."
VOICEOVER: "The five-day Winter Sports Clinic featured ski lessons with certified ski instructors
helping participants hone their competitive edge. The event also involved a challenge
race, as well as adaptive sports workshops and classroom instruction."
SANDY TROMBETTA: "We really want them to return home and continue what they learned here at
the event. Maybe not the activities themselves, but the attitudes, the interests and the different
changes that they make in their own perception of themselves, that they can put into play
so they can live, really, a lot fuller once they return home."
SECRETARY SHINSEKI: "How are you doing?" WOMAN: "I'm good!"
SHINKSEKI: "Great!" HOST: VA Secretary Eric Shinseki -ā who
was there to encourage and support participating Veterans -- told them he sees the Winter Sports
Clinic as a natural extension of outstanding rehabilitative care Veterans receive every
day at VA medical centers across the county. For more information about the Winter Sports
Clinic, go to www.wintersportsclinic.va.gov
