Seventy sharks found dead in Wales were probably thrown off a trawler, say camapigners against
commercial fishing. The Welsh Government says the 70 sharks on Pwll Du beach, in the Gower,
a “mass stranding”. The Shark Trust is demanding limits be set on fished numbers
to avoid a population crash. The Food Standards Agency has warned Swansea chip shops against
selling the washed up fish.
Salford Friendly Anglers has won this year’s Fred J Taylor award. It's given for exceptional
work in protecting or improving water habitats in England. The club was nominated by the
Wild Trout Trust for its clean-up work on the Irwell, a recovering industrial river
that flows through Manchester and Salford. Formed in 1817, Salford Friendly Anglers are
by some margin the oldest fishing club in England.

Coventry Police hope to reel in kids with a summer fishing scheme. Police are offering
bored youngsters with no ‘plaice’ to go this summer the chance to spend a couple of
hours fishing. Officers hope it will put a dent in anti-social behaviour problems that
usually increase in the holidays.
An angler called Stu has landed on of New Zealand’s largest ever bass. Stu caught
the 116lb fish off Kings Island with a 4kg skipjack tuna livebait on 130lb braid in 80
to 100 metres of water. New Zealand holds the world record bass of 190lb.
This week’s big fish viral video is a shark that bit off more than it could chew. A great
white shark that washed ashore in Western Australia apparently choked to death while
trying to gulp down a large sea lion. Investigators found the sea lion, also dead, in the 13-foot-long
shark’s throat.
