Although pennies are being
removed from circulation,
they are still out there
at the time of this filming.
Many pennies in circulation
have a round smooth edge.
Others have a twelve-sided smooth edge.
Nickels have a smooth edge
and they are larger
and thicker than pennies.
Dimes are slightly smaller
than a penny and they have
a serrated edge.
Quarters have a rough grooved
edge and they are larger and
thinner than nickels.
Dollar coins (or loonies) have an
eleven-sided smooth edge
and they are larger
and thicker than quarters.
Two dollar coins (or toonies)
are larger than loonies.
The edge of the coin
alternates from rough to smooth.
The centre of the toonie is
gold in color and the outer
edge is silver.
There is a slightly raised
ring around the centre piece
of the two dollar coin.
Two of the coins people often
have difficulty identifying if
they can't see the colour
differences are the nickel
and the penny.
In this situation, pull out a dime.
Place the flat surface of
the dime on the flat surface
of the mystery coin.
If the dime locks inside
the edges of the coin,
it is a penny.
If it is significantly larger than the dime,
the coin is a nickel.
An easy way to sort and carry
coins in your pocket or purse is to
use the coin sorter
available from ShopCNIB.
It keeps similar coins together,
and makes it faster to find
the coin you are looking for
when paying for purchases.
