>> My name is Boyd Andrews and I'm the owner of B. Andrews Truck Centre. We're a truck and coach shop; we do all types of repairs.
>>My name is Abdellatif Douslimane and I'm a truck and coach technician apprentice. I'm from Morocco.
In Morocco I did work as a millwright mechanic, fixing machines. When I came here I went back to school in Montreal to become a truck mechanic.
>>Abdellatif had previous experience on trailers and trucks. We were looking to find somebody who had experience in this trade,
but we still need time to train an individual to our standard. An apprentice is someone I can train, mold and shape into what my company needs.
>>I am learning every day here; every day is different and every truck is different from the other ones.
>>Abdell is working towards a truck and coach technician; he'll go to school once a year for two months, and when the third year is complete, he can take the government exam.
If you pass the exam, you're a registered truck and coach tech.
There's a lot of different things that an apprentice will learn. There's the engine side - the combustion engine;
there's the powertrain - which is the transmission and the differential, there's the electronic side that's pretty advanced today with all the new technology.
There's emission testing, there's air conditioning, there's welding and a bit of everything.
The trade requires a lot out of an individual and I think you'll never be out of a job. In this trade, as long as the wheels are turning, you'll never be out of a job.
>> We have a good working environment here - like a family.
>>All of my techs and apprentices, we're a pretty close knit group of guys who are here for each other, to help each other, to advance each other.
We're all different people, so one licensed tech may be good at electronics more than another guy who's more advanced on the engine side.
Basically it's understanding each other and make sure when the job has to be done it's done right.
Our connection with Abdell was through apprenticesearch.com.
>> I put my application in with apprenticesearch.com and I got a lot of calls.
>> I think appsearch is a great service; it's a way to connect with apprentices.
It's difficult to find individuals now, but this is a way you can connect at all times.
To take an individual is a commitment on my part and definitely a commitment on his part;
there's a relationship - you employ an individual, put him through an apprenticeship, and he becomes what he wants to become.
>> I feel really confident about my future. I will be really, really happy when I become a licensed truck and coach technician.
That's one of the goals of my life. I will feel great.
