MALI CLIMATE NETWORK ENGAGE THE POLICY - MAKERS
The Environmental Pact
is an initiative of over 100 civil society organisations
Its aim is to preserve preserve the natural resources of Mali
to promote sustainable development
It was piloted by Mali Climate Network -- Reso Climat Mali
What is the Environmental Pact ?
It is an appeal by civil society to policy makers
to commit and engage in issues which matter to the people
This moral contract between government and the the citizens of Mali
is now almost a reality
Almost all candidates in the presidential elections
have now signed the pact
and promised to address the environmental crisis
and its impact on communities
The candidate who will be elected
must really find a sustainable solution
to the political and security crisis of our country
The environment and the economic questions for local communities
must be among the key priorities in the election
So the Reso Climat Mali and its over 150 member organisations
have decided to make an appeal to all the candidates
and asked them to sign a petition not as candidates, but as citizens
We ask them to engage in this moral contract as citizens of Mali
so that if they are elected
and people of Mali give them their confidence,
they will work on these issues as a priority
-- the questions related to environment and climate change
and the livelihood for local communities.
The pact aims at a sustainable use
of Malis natural resources,
it promotes a sustainable
and equitable development for all in Mali
Whoever is elected for President in Mali
and has signed and added his name on Environmental Pact
has personally commited to engage himself.
THE MINISTER of Env: It is true that the pact we have signed today
is a pact about economy, social issues, industry,
but first of all it is a democratic pact.
He who respect the environmental pact
must respect all the other agreements.
As civil society we have mobilised all candidates
to sign the Pact as citizens of Mali before they are elected.
So they have taken a moral obligation
for making the environment a key priority
We as civil society in Mali say to the candidates:
Hey: we will follow you with all our means to see
are you working with us on these priorities?
Hey: Will you, our government keep the promises and committments in the pact
We have had democracy only for five years,
we will follow the issue through the Pact
and we will involve the citizens and the civil society and communities.
It is the first time we as civil society
commit Presidential candidates through an agreement in writing
When me met the candidates
many agreed with us on those priorities
The Pact has 10 key principles
Economic development, with special focus on employment
Sustaimable energy and agriculture and land management
Key is the polluter pays principle
and protection of biodiversity
sustanable agricultural must be a national priority,
The environment must be key in Malis diplomacy
Climate change efforts should be more than empty words
All candates must take more action on these areas
So civil society in Mali call on the future President
to make sustainable development a key national priority
