From the outset, I knew that technology was really going to
be able to give us the ability to work in ways that hadn't
previously been possible.
My name is Jordan Parness, and I'm an architect and I work in
Brooklyn, New York.
In naming my firm Jordan Parness Digital Architecture,
it was really to reflect the idea that we were going to be
going into this always thinking about how technology
was going to not only help us in the design process, but
also become a part of the final product.
When we bought this home it was completely derelict.
It had been unoccupied for over a year and a half.
The pipes had burst.
All the wiring was unusable.
And essentially, what we were buying was a plot of land with
some side walls and a roof.
It really gave us the creative freedom to think about how we
would optimally want to use the house.
Right from the beginning, we were really working in 3D,
which means that we were modeling and
sculpting the spaces.
We were looking at different viewpoints.
Looking at it from a very experiential standpoint, I
think that's the real difference, that 3D technology
allows you to get inside your project, even
before anything is built.
So by creating a 3D model, we can know from the first day
what it was going to feel like to spend time in the kitchen
or what it was going to be like to sit on the couch in
the living room or what the view from the backyard would
look like, looking back in.
And that then allowed us to not only come up with one
design, but come up with a number of different options
and very quickly cycle through the implications of window
sizes and floor placement, stair placement, adjacencies
between the different programs in a way that just wouldn't be
possible if we were doing it with pen and paper.
So this mural is one of a number of site-specific art
pieces that we commissioned for the house.
And so we worked with Tali Hinkis, who is part of the
LoVid Collective, to come up with a concept which really
builds upon the digital hardware that she and her
husband use in their performances.
I think we really see this piece as an integral part of
the overall design.
Ultimately, I think where this project is strongest is just
in the kind of holistic quality of the design.
Once you actually spend a little time walking through
the house, you realize that there's a continuity, not
necessarily in the individual elements, but in the attitude
about space and about light and about lifestyle, which I
think really, really comes across strongly in every
aspect of the project.
