In the Durga Mahishasuramardini sculpture there's a women, by the way they made her
figure. Her expression is unreadable. The woman is wearing a head dress and has a warrior
suit on her with sandals. The woman has nine arms and she's holding a weapon in eight of
them. She's also holding this little village man, while holding a guitar, she look like
she is going to decapitate like the cow that he's standing on along with a lion. There
are two little minions that look like they're going to cut her down to size.
I think this is about how she's fighting for her religious freedom because she decapitates
the cow and cows are sacred in Hindu religion the fact that she did that is a deadly sin.
She is also about to kill another human. That shows how she wants to fight for the people
that may want to contain her. She look like a god, and the little minions probably want
to destroy her freedom by cutting off her will to walk.
This is shown by the movement and her position. The subject that they put on it such as the
cow, and how the women doesn't look like a human but given more of human qualities. She's
more advance like a god and the contrast height of the real human and this god is superior.
This was a symbolism of religious freedom of the 12th century Indian people and what
they need to overcome. It's shown by the new coming gods in the indian religion and how
the gods had to fight for the tolerance like the women is. The artist makes me feel empowerment
toward my beliefs because the sculpture gives you such a religious rebellion and is willing
to kill for her beliefs even if she is going to be killed.
This is a good sculpture because it gives you enough to know what's going on and it's
really empowering it might not have that much detail and emotional expressions but the body
movements shows it. It changes my view on religion and how it is set. How it has to
be violent in order to be tolerated if the case is that severe enough.
Since this artwork wasn't really describe in the DMA i had to find the story behind
it. This is a religious figure that is in battle with demons to restore religious order.
This is one of the battle. I guess the demons are the ones that decapitated the cow. The
story of Mahishasura Mardini is very interesting and I like that she had to be the one to save
the world not just a man. I like her story but I am still confused about the cow. I kind
of wish that they had a description of it it's a lovely piece. I see where they got
it from and their story makes sense to me.
