Now we will me talk with two of Telemark's great sons, namely the boys from Porsgrunn, Emil and Didrik Solli-Tangen.
H: Welcome to "Sommeråpent" E: Thank you D: Thank you
H: First we have to show a picture of your grandfather on your mother's side.
And we have to thank him, because he was one of those who managed to get this boat, former Ragnvald Jarl, to Norway. Right? E: Yes
H: What is the story behind? E: Our grandfather was a chief engnieer. And when this boat was built, and was ready for delivering to Norway,
grandfather was one of them who brought it from Hamburg in the year 1800 or something, a long time ago. And he worked on the boat as the chief engnieer.
I remember I saw a picture with my grandmother from the maiden voyage, and they were dancing on the deck, and grandmother and grandfather were in the newspaper.
H: I always envy those who lived in the old days. D: Everything was much better before.
H: Everything was so much better before. And they danced always on the harbours. E: A very nice dance too.
E. Not this "hands up in the air" dancing. It was real dancing. H:Couples dancing. E: Yes, couples dancing
H: But you have now become two of Norway's most well-known and dearest opera singers. D: Nja H: And you are both operacsingers too
H: Didrik, do you always do the same things? D: No, but it's very often that brothers follow each other's footsteps, or not at all.
D: It started with that I took song lessons with Anders Vangen, and Emil was with me, because we always were good buddies, and we still are.
D: And then I think he saw that it was a bit fun, and then he started too. So it was kind of following his brother's footsteps.
H: And when Didrik probably stood there singing and showed off for his little brother, you made a plan "I will be just as good or even better".
E:I played the guitar at that time, and I remember it very well. We were home at Andres and Didrik had a singing lesson, and I was sitting there playing the guitar
And then Anders said "Aren't you tired of drooling into the guitar case? You can open up and stand up and sing too.
And I thought "Of course, I can try too". So it is a bit of a coincidence. And of course I envied him who was allowed to travel around performing and was big and handsome.
So it has clearly been a factor.
H: And not enough that you both sing opera, you also have lived together for many years.
D: Yes, I was the one who first moved to Oslo, and started at Barratt Due. Emil came later. Two years later?
D: And he moved in with me. And that was quite natural. We didn't think of any other possibilities. E: I don't think I even asked about it
H: But was there a lady there already? D: There was .. E: Not then.
D: Not then probably, but later. At first we lived at "Sankthanshaugen", then we moved to "Adamsstuen" a bit further up, and then to "Bislett".
D: And we stayed there for almost a year. E: About 1,5 years
H: And with girlfriends. D: Yes,we were 4 at the most in that apartment. E: Sigh, yes.
H: Ladies, sigh.
H: And now you have moved out. Do you miss Didrik? E: Yes, in one way ..
D: It's the empty refrigerator he misses. E: In a magical way H: Yes, Didrik says you have such bad economic sense.
E: Money are meant to be used. D: He says "Can you buy some food?" And he says he doesn't have money.
D: Half an hour later we are in a music store and he buys a guitar for NOK 6000 (Euro 800).
D: "Didn't you just say that you don't have any money?" "Yes, but I have money for a guitar".
H: Is this how it is? E: It has happened. H: It has happened.
E: But if this is how it usually is, I don't know, but it has happened.
H: What does he dislike the most? E; He is very tidy. I can be tidy, but he is very tidy.
E: When we lived together he got very annoyed by me for not cleaning up the breakfast before I had finished eating.
D: He believes that the plate goes by itself from the dinner table to the sinktop. And if it gets that far, he believes it goes automatically into the dishwasher.
Even flushes itself too.
H: You sound like an old married couple. E: When you have lived together for three years, it piles up.
H: I have also heard some rumours that he can't stand family parties. He always has to sing.
E: That's just how it is when you are a singer. We have kind of a burden on our shoulders when we are invited to an event,
people expect now and then that we will sing something. And that becomes more and more annoying.
D: Can you just sing a little bit? H: I understand what you mean. D. It's a bit like that.
D: It's not easy to understand. You can compare it with an accountant, and you are sitting there at the dinner and
"I have some taxes, could you check it for me? You are and accountant, right?" "If you just ..."
H: We have understood that you are very good friends, you sing opera, you have lived together and you help each other out.
But there is one thing that is a bit unclear between you two. Because I know, Didrik, that Emil has asked you if you want to come along on a boat trip.
Isn't that correct?
E: Yes, I sailed to Denmark with some buddies some years ago ... D: I won't get into details on how that went
E: It went well, I returned home well. And he said it sounded exciting and wondered if he should come along on a trip.
He thought it would be fun. So I have invited him for a trip if he wants to.
H: You have invited your brother, but he hasn't given you a proper answer yet. So I thought we should get that answer now.
H: You are opera singers. I have written an operetta, There is no melody. We just have to make it ourselves. I'm not modest, I have made a role for myself too.
H: I am the mother. It's always good to have a family drama in an operetta. E: Yes, there often is.
H: And there where you see it says a lot "knot on the thread", I think of that in opera there is a lot of "knot on the thread, knot on the thread..." E: Maybe.
H: But first, do you have any tips? I want to have... Is it important to have that ... D: No, that is just nonsense.
H: The shivering chin. D: That is very overrated. H: Just nonsense? D: You mustn't do that.
H: One tip then, to make this wonderful. D: Just go for it.
H: Are you ready? D: We have to try. H: And remember that in the end we will get the answer if he will go with Emil on the boat trip or not.
D: I see ... Okay. H: You have to choose. D: Okay.
H: Come to mama, you sweet dear, breathe, here in the boat I have given birth to you both. Is there a knot on the thread?
D: Knot on the thread
E: Knot on the thread D: Knot on the thread
E: Knot on the thread
H: Hush, hush, hush, be quiet, ...... Make Didrik understand.
E: Yes, dear mom, hear my words. I'm still waiting for my brother. I have invited him on a trip,in a boat and never grumpy, but I don't get any answer.
D: My dear brother, who has been given birth by our mother. This is completely new for me,
but I have an answer. On a boat with you is a dream for you and me, and my answer is - no. Just kidding, it's yes.
H: And then the final.
H: So, there we manage to get that answer. You said yes to the trip. D: Yes H: That's good.
H: It always feels so good to clear up things when brothers fight. E: Settle the problems H: And there we talked dialect.
H: Thank you for coming to "Sommeråpent". D: We will soon be back H: That's true. You are going to sing, for real.
H: I have become a bit diva now.
