I'm Ruth Hamblin. I'm studying Mechanical Engineering and I'm a center at Oregon State.
I'm from Houston, British Columbia, Canada. Most people in British Columbia don't even
know where that is. It's a small town that's 13 hours north of Vancouver, British Columbia.
I started playing basketball in grade 9. And that was when my math teacher, he was going
to start coaching the team and I really liked him and so he said he would take me under
his wing and that's where the ball got rolling.
I wanted a career where I'd be able to be creative and involved in science at the same
time because I enjoy the two of those. And my brother brought up engineering and I looked
up that and was like "oh, why not" and then it turns out that nobody does engineering
hardly when you are doing athletics but I figured I could do it and it would be definitely
a challenge but I think it will be worth it in the end.
When Ruth finds something that challenges her she really digs her heels in and decides
that Ruth is going to do this, Ruth is going to do it. She finds ways. If it's something
that she needs help with she'll find the resources to get the help. If it's something she can
do on her own she really attacks it and goes right after it. It's a big sign of a champion.
And I think that's just Ruth. She's a champion.
He so it's Friday afternoon. We just had our shoot-around for Arizona State and we play
them tonight at 6:30 PM but in the mean time we've got some Strength of Materials homework
to get done. And it's an online course I'm taking this term.
Well I have so many interests, I sometimes have a hard time making up my mind and mechanical
engineering is so broad, as you may know, there is just so many different fields and
it's almost everywhere. So hopefully I'm just going to play it by ear and and I get to my
senior year I'll have to choose more specific classes but I definitely want to get something
cutting edge in research and developing new technologies that are going to help the world
eventually.
