This is a great experience to do this disc in Istanbul.
The recording sessions are regularly interrupted by the muezzin
who calls for the prayers, this is really wonderful:
that reminds us where we are. And of course, that inspires us,
because we are surrounded by this city, which is absolutely mythical.
For traditional societies and for traditional music
it seems there are more possibilities to exchange,
and this is for me very interesting and important.
But music doesn't have to be
folk music to dialogue with other culture.
I already knew Turkey, but I was not aware of the richness
of the ottoman music repertoire: it is a great court-music,
a very great repertoire, really.
with a beautiful music, a majestic music.
It corresponds with our great works from
16th, 17th and 18th century.
This is a music which was designed for the sultan's court,
so this is an exceedingly exquisite music, composed by great musicians.
Yes, exquisite. I think that is the appropriate term.
But it is also an incredibly expressive music.
