Hello, today i'm going to talk about the historical manuscripts and university
archives collection at the University of Southern Mississippi libraries.
The historical manuscripts collection includes photographs, diaries,
correspondence,
pamphlets, and other materials relating to the history of Mississippi and the
region.
Some of the prominent selections include our civil rights materials,
civil war materials, mississippi politicians,
and the timber and lumber industries in Mississippi.
The university archives contains many of the same types of information...
it's going to have correspondence, diaries, photographs, as well as
brochures and other materials relating to the history of the university
and the different departments of people here.
One thing you'll notice about historical manuscripts and university archives is that we
use acid free archival materials to preserve the materials.
So, for instance, you're going to find acid free boxes, mylar sleeves,
acid free envelopes,
and photocopies, which will all help prolong the lives of the materials.
Most of our materials, around eighty to ninety percent, are the only copies
around, only copies in existence, so we have people come from all over the world
to use our materials and get access to these items.
So because of this we do everything possible, alot of email and phone correspondence,
and really talking with the patrons to help provide information to these materials,
which are only found here at the university of Mississippi.
