(golf swing)
My nephew is visiting us from Michigan.
He came to play some golf and on the plane, he was looking at "Golf Digest."
and saw the guy from Irving that holds
the record. My nephew says "You know Uncle John,
you don't really have to alter your lifestyle too much to beat this record"
because he knew I was playing a lot of golf,
so my wife got wind of it and both of them were the motivating source behind it
and I just set sail to do it. (golf swing) I got away with a bad hit there.
Starting today, I was at
13,337 >>and your final goal?
>>is 14,000 by the end of the month if I can get there.
>>So many holes a day do you pl? >>I'm averaging 38 a day.
>>How long does it take to play? >>Well sometimes it takes a day.
>>It takes sunrise to sunset depending on how crowded it is here.
But I'm getting them in, you know.
It's a drill. (Golf Swing)
Obviously I couldn't do this in Michigan.
You need a climate where you can play year-round.
Financially, they offer tremendous packages here, and with 63 holes
(sound of putt)
There's an awful lot of nice people here and I
think for a public course, it's a great course.
>>One time, give me one time! >>Good shot!
>>Did you putt that or chip it? >>Putt.
>>Good putt. Good Up. I mean you got to like golf to do this.
I did play on some days when it wasn't too much fun to play, windy and cold.
Being cold and wet. There it is. (Laughs)
Chipped it in! But it's a drill, I mean
you have to stay with it, and it became a challenge.
(cart rolling) Oh my god, it's hot!
When it gets cold or when it's a good time to play because the course is kind of open.
You can get a lot of holes in. >>and it's 100-degrees right now. >>I know.
When it's in the 80's. I played last year at 107. I've played in 38-degree weather.
I've played in 107-degree weath. (golf swing)
>>What's it take to keep you ho? >>Well, the course closing.
If it's open, I'm here. There were times I was playing, I was the only car in the parking lot.
(golf swing) That was not too good.
That was a little far right.
>>Sounds like a good way for you
that's one of my friends both from Michigan and here ask is are you married?
What does your wife say? Well actually my wife not only
discouraged this, she encouraged it.
>>Good stroke. I just don't hav. Well maybe you're lining
up wrong. I don't know.
I'm the last guy to ask. >>And then you're a volunteer here as well.
>>I do. I do player assistant work. Saturday mornings, I work 6 hours.
I pick up tees and empty trash and fill in divots.
and fix ball marks on the greens. It's good.
It's nice to be around the golf course.
It's just been a great experience.
It really has you know. There's been times when
it's been tough to go play, but I'll tell you, I'm very grateful and thankful
that my health has stood up thr. >>A lot of exercise too.
>>It is.
So I get a Diet Coke and a cigar, I'm a happy guy on the golf course.
The only three things I need in life right there. A Diet Coke,
a cigar and playing golf.
(sound of sunk putt) >>Maybe you need a camera there all the time. >>Yeah, maybe.
