So my name is Cassidy Kavanagh. Everyone calls me "Sid" at the center, which is where I have
my internship. I am the information Resource
intern at the LGBTA Student Resource Center. I don't really know how i got into the gay
community. The L-G-B-T-Q-Q-I-A community. In high school
I was kind of thrust upon this position as the President of the Gay Straight Alliance.
And so I thought that was really cool and I read up
on a lot of stuff. And I followed news sources and that.
And when I came to college I really didn't have like a group or clique that I belong
to really. And so I thought that the LBGT community would
be one to join. So I went o the center which is
101 Boucke. And its a really cool place, with a lot cool people and they do a lot of really
good stuff. We have an actual building where we can hang
out. And we have curriculum and that sort of thing.
I think the center is mostly for educational purposes, but it's also ther fact that we
have the space for students to come and hang out and
make friends and socialize and not go crazy because
they're doing homework and studying and all that sort of thing. I think we're very fortunate.
I think from an educational standpoint we're a very... we're pretty up there on a 1 to
10 thing. We use LGBT, that's the shorthand version.
That's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. But there
is also a longer one which is-- L-G-B-T-A-Q-Q-I-A-A which is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transgendered,
***, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual and Allies. Students who come to college and have
decide that "I'm gonna be gay here!", "I'm done pretending
to be straight!", that sort of stuff. There actually-- I've met a lot of students who
do that. Sometimes they find the center in like the first
week. And sometimes it takes them like three years. But, I think you can do thet at college.
It's so separated from your house. Like I live
in Pittsburgh, sp I'm three hours away. I can do things
here and my parents would have no clue what I'm doing. i think you can take risks and
that sort of thing. And we have a lot of information
and pamphlets on how to come out to your family if
that's how you feel comfortable. But we are very excited when people come in--
when new people come in. It's very easy to make
friends at the center. We have a television and chairs and you can eat your lunch there.
We have fun books and DVD's. And there are rainbows.
That's really exciting. So we're in 101 Boucke and I
can't wait for everyone to stop in. For Penn State Mobile Journalists, this is Cassidy
Kavanagh.
