The 'We fought fascism together' monument project
Yury Luzhkov. Mayor of Moscow.
We have to make the decision on the eventual version of the monument
that will be constructed by the authors of the winning project.
After that we will immediately proceed to another stage of our work
the construction of the monument in the place chosen by all the participant of the laying of the foundation stone ceremony.
We have already received a lot of responses, saying that this decision corresponds to the idea of the recreation of the destroyed monument in Kutaisi, suggested by Vladimir Putin.
Vladimir Dolgih. The Moscow veteran committee chairman
Our veteran organization has considered here, in this Hall of Glory,
all the monument projects, and those that are now presented here, and some additional ones.
After all, we were almost united and decided to choose the 11th project as the basis for the future monument.
It is necessary to demonstrate our negative reaction to the act of vandalism,
so the new monument has to resemble the Kutaisi one, and it should be clear to all
Valeriy Selivestov. The Chief Executive officer of the Fund for Protection and Restoration of the Great Patriotic War monuments Historical legacy.
I would like to present to you several figures that accompanied the work of our commission since its latest conference:
the competition for the best monument project was held from 5th April to 25th May, more than 30 art studios took part in.
25 projects were displayed in the Exhibition Hall of the Architectural Committee of Moscow.
The competition was international, as sculptors from Belarus and Georgia also took part in it.
The Architectural Committee of Moscow expert group named the 6 best candidates,
whose projects meet all the competitions requirements.
Since 2nd June they are on display.
More than 5,000 people attended the exhibition and over 1,500 took part in the voting.
It only goes to show that we have chosen the right leading idea for the project: We fought fascism together.
People support it with enthusiasm. The fact that some 6,000 people and 2,300 organizations donated our fund also proves the point.
Now we have over 7 million rubles for the project.
And, as you know, the exhibition was visited by our Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
Michael Solomentsev. The chairmen of the Inter-regional and International Policy Committee of Moscow.
I just wanted to say very briefly, that the project number 11 meets all the necessary criteria,
formulated by the public council and the guardian council.
First of all, the new monument should copy the destroyed one.
Secondly, it should be a work of art and symbolize the unity of all nations that formed the grater nation, the Soviet people.
After all, we dont have many serious monuments commemorating the War with a multi-figure composition.
Of course, we do have the impressive monuments in Brest and on the Mamayev Kurgan.
But there are no multi-figure compositions like the Millennium of Russia monument.
It is really interesting to work on historical figures of different nationalities,
so that people could come and study the monument with attention and not by just passing by,
so that they could read who these heroes were.
There was a proposition to engrave the motto We fought the fascism together in all 160 languages of the Soviet Union.
It should be a symbol of the nation, and not only of the victory.
So I think that the 11th project is definitely is in the lead, but it needs some improvements.
Ludmila Shevtsova. The first Deputy Major.
Among these projects, apart from the chosen one, there are some very interesting talented works.
For example, this number 2 project, representing a train
I think it is really worth constructing somewhere in Moscow,
because the theme of Victory trains is one of the most generalized for the Great Patriotic War,
with all the flowers, all the meetings, all joy and sadness.
So I think that we should not only award this project, as well as some others,
like that one with letters, with diploma and prizes, but also try to implement them sometime.
Yury Luzhkov. Mayor of Moscow
To inventory the discussion, we should give certain recommendations to the authors of the 11th project.
They should concentrate the attention on the main figures, the figures of Yegorov and Kantaria,
who raised the Victory Banner on the Reichstag building.
