X
when we got here it was a change
but we had peace and calm when we were out on the streets
it was normal, you left your car unlocked
we started working in a hotel
we started
the same year we got here
that same year
I was nominated for employee of the month
and I was, well I was employee of the month
and I was employee of the year
When we’re driving, we’re always afraid
it’s the two of us because we work together
we work in the same thing
we’re there
if the police stops us for x reason
they’re going to take us both
they’re going to be left alone (points to other kids?)
they say that we came here to take their jobs
I think it’s racism (off camera)
I think it’s pure racism
we don’t mess with anyone
we don’t have a criminal record
my kids until today, thank god
haven’t gotten in trouble
they’re not involved in gangs
and so, for them to try to mess with you like that
I feel, it’s racism
it’s ironic but…
Why is it ironic? (off camera)
because we’ve cleaned for people that know that we are
that voted for this man
that supported this law
that are…
so you say, what?
What is this?
They stab you in the back
They want to kick us out
but at the same time they’re, they..
need us to clean their house.
This law has had such an impact that we don’t know what to do
and now you can’t differentiate
if they’re staring at you because of hate
or because they feel sorry for you
to let my kids study
to give them the opportunity to succeed
because that’s why we’re here
I mean, we came here to give our children a better future
give them the opportunity
we don’t know if later on
one of them can become a politician in this country
I tell them that
when such ugly and bad things happen
it’s because something good comes after
so that, that is what keeps us here til this day
and will keep us here til…
we were worried about school but the stopped that already
so I tell them for me
that is already a huge step
because that is our driving force, their school
I have hope and faith that they’ll realize
we didn’t come to hurt anyone
we came to work and to help our kids succeed
we want a new future for them
it’s not being supported as Arizona was
where is the support of George Lopez
where is Jennifer Lopez?
where is Marc Anthony?
where is Ricky Martin?
where are all of those people
that when Arizona happened
how amazing, how great that they opened up and said we don’t agree
we’re missing a lot of support
we’re missing a lot of support and….
I call and the operator answers
I ask her, I tell her everything and she asks how many bullets were there
and she asked me for the name and address
and she asked for my name and address
and I gave it to her
I have nothing to hide
I don’t
and she asked me, do you want to talk to someone
but she never told me who
so I said no, I don’t want to talk to anyone
and I say, maybe because of the same fear
that if I talk to someone the first thing they’ll ask is
are you legal? right, the police
because now, now there is that fear
that people won’t do that
that was out of instinct because of my kids, my kids’ safety
not because I felt like calling 911 to report
because when she asked me
do you want to talk to somebody?
the first thing I thought was
they’re going to ask about my papers
so I said no, no.
