Women are fearful of the pain, you don't know how your going to
tollerate it. And you don't. There are women with very high pain
tollerances that have had multiple surgeries and had no problem,
and get to labor and are just afraid it's going to get worse.
There are several holistic methods women employ to help with
those. There's breathing, there's childbirth education classes-
almost every facility that delivers babies has those. Several
patients will work with the Doula, which is a person that stands
in with them. They don't deliver the baby, but they are with
them from the onset of labor, help them with the breathing and
are kind of their advocate. They've talked to them ahead of time
knowing what they're wishes and desires are. There's always the
Epidural which most women do end up using an Epidural. And I
tell everybody that comes in that I see that don't want it to
keep your options open, because until you know what your talking
about or you've actually had those contractions. You know you
always have a labor partner also, whether it be your spouse,
your domestic partner-who knows you and knows what your wishes
and desires are. Sometimes it's hard for them to be that
advocate because they see you in pain and it's someone that
usually cares about you-whether it's your mother or whatever.
And it's hard to be objective and follow through on your wishes.
So a Doula is a little bit emotionally separate from that and
knows. Again tell your Doula what you want. If you get to the
point where you are not tollerating anything, your body starts
to work against you, you won't dialate. You can't relax. That's
when you may want to go to alternate methods of pain relief. And
the Doula needs to know that so they won't persist.
