iPhone 5 troubles. A giant eyeball in space... LOLcats the TV show... and an app to organize
your life! I'm Cali Lewis. Welcome to Geek Beat
[music]
Episode #512 of GeekBeat.TV is brought to you by Carbonite.
It's not the "Eye of Sauron," but it comes close! This is a picture captured by
a pair of NASA telescopes. It's the Helix Nebula, which is about 650 light years from
earth in the Aquarius constellation. Nebulas are stars about the size of our sun that are
near the end of their lives: What looks like the pupil is a nebula on its way to becoming
a small dwarf star. And the rest of the cosmic eyeball is made up of hydrogen and helium
clouds. Our own sun is expected to look like this in about 5 billion years.
If you're still waiting on your iPhone 5 to arrive, you may have to wait a bit longer.
There are reports that workers in the Foxconn factory in China went on strike. Foxconn is
denying it, and I have to say... from the reports, a strike there doesn't seem quite
like a strike here in the States. It seems less organized, but many of the quality control
inspectors didn't show up to work. There are reports of violence and even some hospitalizations.
It does appear that everything's back on production schedule, but if they decide to
strike again.... be ready to wait!
Even if you have to wait for your iPhone 5, it doesn't mean you can't use your crappy
old iPhone 4S for something really useful in the meantime! I recently started playing
with an app called Storganeyes. Its sole purpose is to help you manage all the storage in your
entire house. To help you figure out what you have, and where it is, to save you time
when you're searching for something, and save you money so you don't buy stuff you
already own! You basically create a map of your garage, attic and basement. More customized
options are coming soon. Then you add a bin, or a single item (for things like mattresses
that don't fit in bins). When you create a bin, you then color code it. Then tell it
what items are in your bin. Christmas decorations. Extra light bulbs. Tax papers. Whatever. Drop
the bin in the proper location to match what you have in real life. And when you need to
find something, you just do a search, and the app will show you exactly where it's
located. It's 99 cents on the iOS app store and could be totally worth it!
Of course, as you're organizing your life and saving yourself time and money, you should
be thinking about how you could do just that for all your data on that computer of yours!
All those photos you took. The videos of your kid's first steps. Your wedding day. How
would you feel if you lost all of that because you didn't take the time to back it up OFF
SITE? I wouldn't forgive myself! Carbonite is online backup and because it's offsite,
it doesn't matter if you have a fire. You'll be able to get those files back super easily
and quickly. Go ahead - set aside some time to get it done before it's too late. Put
it on your calendar if you have to! Carbonite.com with offer code GeekBeat will get you a free
trial and 2 bonus months if you buy. Carbonite.com. Code GeekBeat
If you can't get enough LOLCat videos we have some good news. The Cheezburger Network
- which owns the LOLCat franchise, along with FailBlog, MemeBase & I Can Haz Cheezburger?
is coming to the Bravo Network on cable as a reality show next month. Which is perfect
since the Friskies has been announced. It's an award show, like the Emmy's, for funny
cat videos. The winner can get $15,000, and of course a whole lotta Friskies.
I'm Cali Lewis. Send me your cat videos on Google+ or Twitter. I'm off to find myself
a kitty cat.
