Sarah Wagner: First thing you want to do is identify those family photographs
that are most important to you, things like your wedding photographs.
If they’re still in a frame, remove them from the frame.
If they’re in albums that have plastic pages, you’ll want to get them out of those pages,
so that they won’t dry and stick to the pages.
If your photographs are in wet, filthy water, you’ll want to wear gloves to protect your
hands from any germs and sewage.
Gently rinse off the photographs and put them in a dishpan or pail of clean water
until you’re ready to dry them. If the grime is already dried on, you may
have to gently rub your fingers over the surface or take a soft brush and gently wipe the surface.
And now we’re ready to dry them.
Take your photographs out of the clean water, drain off the excess, blot them dry a little
bit. Put them on a surface where you can get air
circulation from both sides, such as an everyday window screen,
or you can even hang dry them from a laundry rack.
