Sofia: Recently Ive been working on a couple of things. One of which every other intern
is probably working on too. The final presenation we do to recap our projects for all of the
summer. My hiring manager is going to be there, most of my team, some of the other interns
and hiring managers. Its been something Ive been working on making sure that the final
touches are good to go and that my presentation quality is up to par too.
Sofia: At work you have interactions with people all over the company just to get your
work done everyday because its a very matrixed organization. But at the same time we have
opporutnites to get to know each other on a personal level. We ran the Corporate Challenge
a few weeks ago across Central Park and definatley sweat it out together and we had a fun day
which is something that every group at AMEX seems to do where we did a triva taboo game
and then we also did a scavenger hunt across the city. So things like that I think get
you to build your relationships naturally and it never feels too forced or anything.
Sofia: Coffee chats at AMEX are a huge part of the culture. Essentially you get thirty
minutes on a calendar with a manager or director who is working on a business unit probably
different than yours and you get to ask questions, learn about what their day to day is like,
what their career trajectory has been like at AMEX and essentially start to learn about
what you might be interested in for when you come back. Related so, especially for finance
interns, I know its a big deal for me and some of my peers, we get to make the decision
to be either park of the job rotational program or part of the direct hire process. If we
are selected and have the opporutnity to come back in one of those two capacities you have
a slightly different experience.
Sofia: In finance at American Express you have the opportunity to note your preference
over a job rotation program or being a direct hire straight into a business unit and really
they give you the opportunity to learn about both kinds options. One is the direct hire
process is pretty self explanatory but the rotational program is a twelve month rotation,
three times over. Over the course of three years its a committment but you get to see
completly different parts of the business and you may even get to go abroad. There are
some placements internationally too, so its something Ive been thinking about a lot as
I have my coffee chats and as I think about future next steps.
