[C. Copp] Hi, I’m Capri Copp, your host for the December 2nd edition of IUPUI’s
The Spot.
IUPUI was ranked eighth among the 10 best public colleges in the Midwest. The study
conducted by Forbes ranks undergraduate institutions based on the quality of education provided,
the experience of the students, and how much they achieved.
With finals ending on Monday, December 21st, what could be better than beginning your winter
holiday with a day trip to Chicago? The School of Science Undergraduate Student Council is
once again hosting their annual Chicago Bus Trip. The Spot spoke with Council Treasurer,
Liz Sweeney for more information.
[L. Sweeney] The purpose is to give students kind of a break after finals. We always do
it the day after finals end, so it gives students kind of a chance to relax.
The School of Science Student Council’s been doing this trip for over ten years, and
basically what we do is we use student activity funds to rent one or two buses, and then have
students pay just a small fee.
The stops that we have are the Museum of Science and Industry, The Field Museum, and Michigan
Avenue, which is for downtown shopping. The bus trip will be taking place the day after
finals, which is Tuesday, December 22nd.
The price for School of Science students is ten dollars, and for all other students, it
is twenty dollars. You can go to LD 222 to pay and to fill out forms. I just recommend
getting in there as soon as you can because last year we ran out of spots.
[C. Copp] Finals are almost here and the school year is quickly coming to an end. The Department
of Intramural and Recreational Sports would like to help you combat stress from finals
by teaching you simple stress reduction techniques on Wednesday, December 9th from noon to 1pm
in University Library’s Lilly Auditorium. You can register for this Stress Busters session
by visiting the Rec. Sports office in Physical Education Building Room 043.
The IUPUI University Choir presents an evening of music on Monday, December 7th from 7:30
to 9pm. Tickets are 5-dollars at the door in the Information and Communications Technology
Complex Room 152.
Before graduation, it all starts with a vision and a goal, and after graduation, IUPUI alumni
are fulfilling their dreams. The Spot went out into the community to find out where they
are now. We spoke with Joshua Stahl to see what he has accomplished post-graduation.
[J. Stahl] At first I had wild dreams of becoming a great, successful writer, but after a while,
I just kind of became focused on getting through school, getting out, and getting a good job.
I work with the Indianapolis Star. I’m the Assistant Circulation Sales Coordinator, and
my job basically, the responsibilities vary. We set the amount of papers that go out in
the metro area. We also go out and look for new venues that will sell the Indianapolis
Star, and we sell at different events; the Indy 500, the Brickyard 400, Moto GP, Colts
and Pacers games.
Now, the IU School of Journalism at IUPUI, the curriculum is fantastic because it’s
been formulated to set you up for success.
[C. Copp] Are you a Jaguar fan? You can attend a taping of The Ron Hunter Show starring IUPUI’s
very own, Coach Ron Hunter. The filming takes place in the Campus Center on Mondays from
1 to 2pm. The show airs on Hometown Sports channel 81 on both Comcast and Brighthouse.
This week in sports the both the women’s and men’s basketball teams take on South
Dakota State at 4:30 and 7pm in the Jungle on Saturday, December 5th. Tickets are available
free for students prior to game day with a valid JagTag.
The women’s and men’s swim teams have a busy day in the IU Natatorium! Starting
at 1pm the women face Ball State and Saint Louis University. The men play Western Illinois,
Ball State, and Saint Louis University also at 1pm. Both meets take place on Saturday,
December 5th, in the IU Natatorium. Good luck and go jags!
That’s it f or The Spot this week. Be sure to tune in next Wednesday for the latest campus
news and student activities at jagtv.iupui.edu.
I’m Capri Copp, and thanks for Spotting us!
