Public Speaking Tips [0:00:00]
Everybody watching this video is a public speaker.
Understand that communicating and clearly getting across your message is key to success
in life.
In this video, I’m teaching you how to speak, so people listen.
[Music] Tip number one to being an amazing public
speaker.
Don’t be nervous, be excited.
And there’s a big difference here.
Every time I go out on stage, every time I get in front of my camera, I get this feeling,
but that’s what you want to do.
You want to reframe re-channel this energy, so that it’s positive.
Tip number two.
Know your content code.
The easiest presentations are ones in which you are an expert on the subject matter.
How to become an expert?
Guys, start off with reading.
I started reading about men style, these four books gave me a good foundation.
I have become a subject matter expert.
So, talking about this, creating presentations, doing these videos incredibly easy because
I put in the work and I know the content code.
Energy.
You’ve got to have energy.
Here’s the deal is anytime you’re up on stage, you’re in front of a camera, it’s
like a vampire.
It’s going to suck away a lot of the energy from the viewer.
And, when you’re up there on stage when you’re talking to people, don’t be afraid
to go a little bit theatrical.
That is fine.
Better to have too much energy than not enough.
Tip number four.
Deal with impostor syndrome by earning our place.
And what I mean by this is you outwork people because you may be up there on stage thinking,
okay, am I really the best?
And you may not be the best, but here’s the deal, put in the effort put in the work
and you have earned the right to stand up there.
The next tip to become a better public speaker, invest in yourself.
Start off with books, but you want to have some skin in the game.
You want to spend the time, you want to spend some money.
Look to take a class online.
There are tons of options, guys, but I recommend Skillshare, the paid sponsor of today’s
video.
Guys, look at this class right here, Presentation Essentials by Simon Sinek.
I’ve read all of his books and, I’m actually gone through this class, a very solid presentation
good information in this class.
Well, let’s say you want something more specific.
Look at T.J. Walker.
He’s got this class right here, Speaking Skills for Engineers.
I absolutely love how he gets that ultra specific or how to be a speaker within 24 hours.
I’ve gone through his classes as well.
And, go check out Gary Vaynerchuk.
If you want something outside of public speaking, but you want to become better at your marketing
or sales job, check out Gary Vaynerchuk’s Context is Key: Social Media Strategy in a
Noisy Online World.
Guys, I want you to go check out Skillshare, they’ve got over 23,000 classes in design,
in business, in technology, in photography, in entrepreneurship, in film, and writing.
Oh, and did I mention how affordable it is?
They’ve got subscriptions for less than $10 a month.
I’m linking to Skillshare down in the description of this video.
Use that link and get two months free.
Guys, that’s only for the first five hundred people that click on the link down in the
description.
So, my next tip for you to become an amazing public speaker, sell your own event.
Yes, it may be somebody else’s job to get butts in seats, but you want to encourage
people to attend.
I started doing this and lo and behold, the people that I invited actually showed up.
All of a sudden you’re able to control and to the next tip you know your audience because
you’ve invited the people in.
You’ve already spoken with them, you’ve got to – you’ve kind of understood who
they are because you don’t know your audience when you go in and you think that these are
beginners, but their advanced seasoned lawyers and you’re talking about entry point law
stuff.
Guys, you’re going to lose them, so you’ve got to know your audience.
And the next point is you want to have certain people that you’ve got beacons are what
I call them.
They’re your cheerleaders.
These are people that you know, you know their names, you know their stories, and you can
actually make eye contact during your presentation.
They’re going to give you a smile when you need it.
When you forget something, they’re going to give you that nod like keep going.
Those are your cheerleaders.
So, my next three tips for becoming an amazing public speaker, practice, record, and time
yourself and they go together.
So, practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent and if you’re making a lot
of mistakes and you keep practicing making those mistakes, you’re going to continue
to make those mistakes that’s why you record yourself.
You watch the recording and you time that recording because that story you thought took
a minute ends up taking five minutes, that’s going to throw your entire presentation off.
So, by practicing, and improving, adjusting, you’re going to get better and that happens
when you record and you time yourself.
So, my next two tips for you becoming an amazing public speaker is do not abuse visuals and
use visuals creatively.
So, I put them in that order in particular because I think most people when it comes
to slides, they totally abuse them.
They read off the slides, they jampack those slides with information.
Don’t rely on your slides so much that that is your presentation and if they failed, you
would fail as a presenter.
No.
Be more creative.
Use slides as they were intended to enhance and that is a good tool.
So, right here, I pull up this shoe.
This is a visual and I can tell you now that these shoes here I can talk all day about
shoes.
Okay.
This isn’t a video about shoes, but as you can see a good visual should actually bring
in energy and make you want to talk about the subject.
[0:05:01] So, my next tip for giving an amazing presentation,
break your presentation up into parts.
So, what sounds more intimidating six five-minute presentations or one thirty-minute presentation?
Well, it depends on the person, but I know for me, a lot of smaller presentations is
a lot easier.
All of a sudden it becomes much more manageable.
You’re able to break through using what I talked about actually practicing, recording,
and timing, all of a sudden you’ve got something that is very structured and it’s going to
be much better and much enjoyable for the audience to watch and for you to present as
well.
So, my next tip for your amazing presentation, make sure to do your reconnaissance.
Do your recon.
That’s when you go out there, you check out the room where you’re going to give
the presentation.
How big is it?
Is – where are people going to be seated?
Am I going to be up on stage?
How are the lights?
Okay, I want to test the audiovisuals, I want to make sure what is my voice sound like when
they’re up there.
Is there going to be water available?
Ask all of these questions, do all of these in advance and you’re going to save yourself
a lot of pain later on.
Next up, let’s talk about your body.
So, the night before, get a good night’s sleep.
It’s not going to help to go ahead and cram that presentation.
Guys, you need to have sleep.
Next up, make sure to be drinking some water.
Make sure to eat food normally.
So, you don’t want to eat anything that’s strange that could, yes, cause an upset stomach
and know where the bathrooms are at.
Ten minutes before you go on stage especially if it’s a longer presentation, use the bathroom.
And, speaking of your body, don’t be afraid to use those hand movements don’t be afraid
to use positive body language.
Don’t be afraid to use those legs.
You can move around the stage.
I have seen people very successfully and, again, they practice this, they go off the
stage and they engage with the audience.
Guys, you’ve got legs, you’ve got arms, use them to get across your message and communicate.
And, I think it goes without saying that gentlemen, you need to dress for success.
You need to dress the part of the speaker and that’s key.
You do not want to betray expectations.
I’m not saying you need to wear a sports jacket or a suit or a tie, but I am saying
that you need to think about what message do you want to send and make sure that you
send that message.
People have an expectation of someone that’s giving the information, someone that’s trying
to motivate them.
Someone that is giving them this presentation, make sure that you dress the part.
All right, gents.
So, at this point, I want to poke a little bit of fun at myself.
Check out this old video, Five Public Presentation Tips.
I put this up years ago.
Look at how bad go watch this video look at how bad I am.
[Laughs] I mean let me know in the comments.
I think I’ve gotten a lot better or have I gotten worse?
In any case, gentlemen, whether or not you are bad or good wherever you’re at on this
spectrum you can always improve yourself, you can always get better and it starts with
you investing in yourself.
All right, gentlemen.
That’s it.
Take care.
And use this information take action on it to become the man you know yourself to be.
That’s it.
Take care.
See you in the next video.
