I remember that Danny and I would write…we were writing for comics in the early days,
and we would write a monologue, and Danny was more the performer than I was, and so
Danny would read the monologue to my Mother, and she would laugh and laugh, and he was
really feeling very good. And he said, “Did you understand that joke?” And she said,
“Oh, was that a joke?” And he said, “Well why were you laughing?” And she says, “Well
I don’t know. You do it funny, and it makes me happy to watch you do this.” So, we didn’t
learn anything from my Mother’s appreciation of our work, but it was nice to have her supportive.
It took a long time for my father to become supportive, especially with me. It took a
long time, because I wrote the first couple of plays when he was rather ill, and the last
play he saw was my third which was Barefoot in the Park.
