Actually the University of Nottingham is one of the best in the field of Public International
Law because they have their own Human Rights Law Centre, so a lot of conferences are organised.
The 14th annual conference in the field of Human Rights was held here this year. So it's
really interactive and you have the opportunity to meet a lot of people from this field, so
that was really good actually. I studied law because I think I was really good at arguing.
And why Human Rights? Because I think that my childhood in Madagascar made me really
conscious of all these issues. Because in this place you can really see poverty, you
can really see what it is like not to have access to water, to sanitation, to education.
All these things that are basic for us. This semester I took something called Religion
and Human Rights. I didn't even know that there were so many problems around freedom
of religion and Human Rights. And I just realised that it was probably the field that was the
most interesting for me because I come from France and there are a lot of problems around
secularism and the place of religion in the public sphere. So I realised that even on
a personal level, if I want to go back there, I will have to face these kinds of things,
when I will have to find a job, for example. Because in some places I won't be able to
wear my headscarf for example. So actually it became really interesting and I now know
that my dissertation topic will be about that. If you want to ask whatever, if you have a
question, for example even in the library, when you don't know anything, they are really
nice actually. That was really cool because at first when I just came here, I had a lot
of problems, even with talking, you know. I was struggling because I was used to talking
French. I had all my studies in French and I had to switch everything in two days. So
it was quite hard and what I really like is that people are really sensitive and they
will just listen to you and they won't rush you so that is really cool.
Just go for it because it's a really good opportunity. I think it's my best experience
so far. Everything actually was better than I expected. So I would just say "Don't miss
such an important opportunity."
