A viewer asks, my children used to love to go to the movies, but ever since the theater
shootings they seem anxious when the lights go out. How can I help them? Talk with your
children about the fact that the world is basically a safe place with good people. But
there are some bad people in the world that do bad things. And this is one of the things
that happened at the theater shooting in Colorado. Talk with them about the changes that have
gone into effect in the movies ever since that no longer allow backpacks, there is an
increase presence of police at the mall theaters and people are much more vigilant in watching
for anything that would be dangerous. Have an open and ongoing dialogue with your child
about their concerns and fears and most importantly let them know that it is your job to protect
them. And let them know that if you were there in the movie with them what kind of things
you would do to protect them, such as covering them, their bodies with yours to protect and
keep them safe. And just encourage an ongoing dialogue about their fears and concerns about
things that are going on in the world and especially things that they hear or see on
the news or television. Thanks for the question.
