Profiles in Design pottery barn kids
Hi, I'm Allison Spampanato, VP of Design for Pottery Barn Kids.
For me inspiration is everywhere. I constantly carry my camera with me,
last night I was taking pictures of Victorian doors on the drive home, from work, you just never know
where something will catch your eye and what it might inspire you to create.
My design style is an eclectic mix, and I think the perfect room for a child
should not be matchy matchy, it should be about the way a child lives.
and it's a collection of their favorite toys,
their favorite colors, their favorite themes, and how all of that just works together.
As a new mom, some of my favorite things are new diaper bags. I think they're fabulous. Of course it's all about functionality, you usually
only have one hand free, to do what you need to do, so you need to make sure there's a special
place for everything, for the bottles, for the wipes, for the changing pad,
for the food, everything that you need when you're on the go.
The challenge of designing functional products is that you you really have to pay attention to every detail,
testing out the products, the wearability, the color fastness,
you know - does the fabric crock? - and really just making sure that the product will stand up to the test of time.
Our team at Pottery Barn Kids is amazing. There are so many talented designers that focus on so many different
things, from lighting to toys to plush,
and seeing those designers each season come up with so many great ideas,
for other categories is really special. The toy designer coming up with lighting ideas, the plush designer
having ideas about desks,
it really brings a lot of magic to each season.
The most rewarding part of our job is when we actually see the kids
playing with our product, interacting and laughing,
and discovering, it's really magical to see the kids light up.
