I am Tom Angell with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.
Director Kerlikowske you said that the idea of
legalizing drugs is of the charts for discussion.
But in recent weeks a number of serious people like Senator Jim Webb,
former Mexican President Vicente Fox and
the current Mexican ambassador of the United States
have all said that legalization is a serious idea worth serious consideration.
And even on page one of the UNODC report up today
Mr. Costa devotes significant space to
discussing the arguments for legalizing drugs.
Do you think that this recent discussion is dangerous and should be discouraged or
do you think under the Obama administration in this era
scientifically all options really should be on the table for consideration
before we decide to a new way to move forward?
Sure we are a country of free speech and so I think
the last thing that anyone in the administration would do
would be to suppress free speech in that discussion.
As regards to legalization it is not in the President's vocabulary and it is not in mine.
