Just south of Lexington, the Confederate Memorial State Park in Higginsville, Missouri, is the
site of the Confederate Soldiers Home and Cemetery. The home offered shelter to displaced
veterans of the South from the end of the Civil War until 1950, when the very last rebel
soldier residing in the home died. Visitors can stroll the tranquil grounds and
tour the park's farmhouse, cottage and beautifully-restored chapel. In the nearby cemetery, the Confederate
Memorial Monument stands in tribute to these veterans who fought for the Lost Cause and
the memory of the Old South. Among these men lies another, more deadly
Confederate - William Quantrill. As a leader of the brutal guerilla warfare group called
"Quantrill's Raiders", he is most remembered for his vicious massacre in Lawrence, Kansas,
where he and his raiders murdered nearly 200 men and burned much of the town. But only
part of Quantrill is actually buried here. Visit the Confederate Memorial to find out
where the rest of his remains lie.
