Punk has been underestimated because of what people remember of that period.
The older generation thought punk rockers were stroppy and just showing off.
They wanted to shock people with their outfits and they'd give the finger to the authorities.
It'd be a shame if that's what punk was reduced to because it was much more than that.
I think the most important element of punk was the do-it-yourself principle.
Punk rockers felt they couldn't rely on the authorities.
So they ignored the establishment.
They did what they thought was best. They used their creativity to create possibilities for themselves.
You can film yourself here and make your own TV.
You can learn about the '80s if you weren't around then.
The punk philosophy is more relevant than ever.
People won't do things for you so make the most of your own possibilities.
If you see punk as a period of great creativity...
then maybe it's dead If you see it as youth culture maybe it's also dead.
But I think it's more important to focus on what still remains of the punk era.
It continues to inspire people...
not only because of the music, the fashion...
and the art that emerged during the punk era.
But the most important thing is the philosophy because it remains relevant to this day.
