I'm Nancy Frensley. I'm the training manager at the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society. We're
going to talk today about taking care of a Pug. Pugs are a small, flat-faced dog. The
technical term for that is brachycephalic, which means that they have a domey head, round
eyes, and a very, very flat face. Now, what happens when a dog has a flat face like that
is they often will overheat, because they're not getting as much oxygen as a dog with a
regular type of muzzle. So, that's the first thing you're going to have to take care of,
is making sure the your Pug does not get overworked or overheated. Other than that, they are an
extremely hardy little dog that enjoy a number of sports. They really like playing with you.
They're playful, they're good walkers, and just delightful to care for. The coat is not
a problem, and, among the other things that they do get, that you have to watch out for,
is something called "cherry eye", where they'll get a little gland in their eye will become
swollen, and that will require surgery. And, their eyes can pop out, so you have to be
really careful about any kind of blow or squeezing that happens to them can pop their eyes, so,
you want to be careful about that. Gotta take care of the head, gotta take care of the face,
and the rest of the body is just fabulous.
