Gamelab 2012
Award ceremony Arteria Paral-lel Theater 06-28-2012
Camera and Editing: Jesús Fabre Translation and subtitles: Josema Sánchez
Seriously, like this?
I mean, it's been a long trip... uh...
I have a toothache and...
you give me this *** welcome?
No, no. No!
I don't want your pity!
No! No! No.
Listen, I'm going back in.
All right, all right.
Listen to me.
I want something that comes from inside. So I'll go back in and then out again.
I'll pretend this didn't happen, ok?
When I step out again, I want you to scream and kick
as if you had just seen Janet Jackson's ***, ok?
Or something like that.
Come on!
Look at the dance I prepared for this. What's up?
Listen, I know I haven't done anything yet to deserve this. But it's like a vote of confidence.
If this turns out like crap you just don't applaud and we're even. Get it?
But a welcome like this is very gratifying for an artist. For an artist and for anyone. Anyone!
An applause motivates anyone. I'm telling you, who wants a free applause from me?
You!
Come here. Come out here before I get you myself.
Have a look at this boy. The future of videogames.
Climb from this side. Shoosh, be cool!
We don't know anything yet.
Come here. Stand here so everyone hears you.
- What's your name? - Adrián
With a capital "A", huh?
A-drián, did you notice how this guy said it?
Adrián, why do you think we should give you an applause?
Did you do anything interesting or good?
Should I ask your mother?
- Good grades. - Good grades, his mother tells him.
- Good grades? Did you get good grades? - Very good ones.
Yeah? You've got the looks. Yes, you've got the looks!
Where did you leave your glasses? Come on!
Listen to me, Adrián. Get off the stage and I'll introduce you properly so that they applaud you.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have an extraordinary person with us here today.
Well, uhm... he hasn't really done much in his life yet.
But he suddenly woke up some days ago and found out he had passed all his tests.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, he is Adrián!
Thank you very much, Adrián. You can go now.
Don't let it go to your head. That's enough.
Can you see that? That's more like it.
"Good evening", says here.
"Welcome to the International Videogame and Interactive Entertainment Fair award ceremony."
I know what those who attended last year's event are thinking.
"Last year's was presented by Corbacho" and now I'm here, not as famous.
Things are going downhill, aren't they?
No, don't think that. It's not a big deal.
Bear in mind he presented the Goya Awards and now he is in "Tú si que vales".
I presented the Forqué Awards and now I'm here introducing this show.
Maybe it's my career what's going downhill. But that's another topic.
Take a look at the Goyas. I've talked about the Goyas. When the Goyas are announced,
everyone is very emphatic about this,
the whole spanish film industry begins a fierce battle of influences and contacts in order to get tickets,
friend trafficking, favours, fondling, and many other embarrasing activities we won't discuss here. It's true!
It's true, I can... I'm adding this. Even though I'm an academic, I have to struggle to get tickets.
The calls I had to make. Because you have to make a lot of phonecalls. I don't know why.
You make a ton of calls until one day they give you a ticket or not.
The first year I called for like 2 weeks, 7 times a day at least.
And I arrived with my ticket, which felt like I had got the Holy Grail.
And as I arrived at the door, who did I find there?
Yola Berrocal. With her ticket.
She must have got hers doing "calls" as well.
I'm not sure, Adrián.
On the other hand, in this videogame industry you don't need all that conspiracy.
Basically, because all the industry fits in this room.
There's even some free space.
There's some spare room there for mothers to come like... yours.
We're friends now, aren't we?
Talk to you later, Adrián.
Cinema is one of those artistic profesion that loses its dignity
due to the over the top festive-*** activities of its members.
Which end up decorating the covers of the tabloids in the summer.
The videogame industry however...
No sex, no news, friends.
Looking on the bright side... no one *** but no one *** with you, huh?
There's a kid here...
Well, getting back to business. I'm thrilled to present this ceremony.
I've been a videogame fan since I was little. I remember playing for hours on end.
Every Friday after *** I would... play.
I would get everything dirty from Cheetos.
And when I say everything, I mean...
I specially like that the creatives have come...
Uhm... I have a little problem here. Is it creatives or creators?
Because I've been scolded before.
Is it wrong to say creatives? It sound a bit derogatory, doesn't it?
Creators sounds cooler. I don't know. Tell me off later.
This people, the creatives, are those who come up with things like Sonic.
A blue hedgehog that runs very fast, huh?
That's really cool. To get paid for doing this things, huh?
I mean, I've seen a lot of colourful flying animals and I've paid very well for them.
Historical context and Minister's speech.
... and then came the videogames.
They scare me at the same time. I believe they're guys who could destroy the world with a keyboard.
The same thought I had the first time I saw Nacho Cano.
The Nineties.
What a fascinating time, with its games and those suggestive covers, huh?
Filled with gorgeous and colourful spaceships.
Then you loaded the game and after 30 minutes of undecipherable sounds,
you had to save the world in a triangle.
Huh?
It was more entertaining to watch the teletext.
Nowadays the graphics are much better than reality.
Messi from FIFA 12 has a better resemblance to Messi than the real Messi.
No? He's better-looking.
And when a football player is called a "videogame footballer" it means he can work miracles.
If that happened 20 years ago it meant you moved like this.
Like Julio Salinas.
The one that excited me was... this guy with a moustache who thought he had to save the world...
No, not Aznar. Super Mario.
I love it! A videogame I like because it has a happy ending. He ends up married to a princess.
That's cool. A plumber with a princess.
If that happened in real life, Peñafiel's head would explode.
Welcome to this ceremony.
Before giving way to the first awards of the night
there's someone very important and respected who wants to tell you something.
Very important and respected? This must be wrong: he's the minister.
As the Minister for Culture, Education and Sport of Spain,
I want to welcome you to the 5th Gamelab Awards. The videogame industry awards.
Awards given by the professionals of the interactive arts and sciences, as you know.
This is a ceremony that gathers creators and professionals,
businessmen not only from a future-oriented industry, it's also an industry with a future.
A sector that's becoming a leader within the cultural and creative industries,
in which our country, Spain, has a privileged position.
More than 200 companies develop their activities in this field, in the different parts of this field,
creating AAA titles; very advanced videogames for all platforms and netting excellent results.
Results that not only involve videogame creation but also many ancillary industries that exist around it.
This is the critical message I'd like to give as Minister for Culture.
But also, as Minister for Education, I want to point out the huge possibilities that this industry has
in the field our youth's education.
I an economic time like this one, finding a niche of future,
a niche of employment like that which videogames offer is most important.
What's more, I want to comment on the videogame's contribution as cultural and creative industry
to aspects that improve our life in society: its ability to keep values in dialogue,
to promote the dialogue between generations,
the stimulus that the development of this industry means to investigation.
All of this shapes a situation in which this awards, that recognize success in the videogame industry,
this Gamelab Awards are something that, according to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture,
stimulates us and also drives us to request all of you who are in charge of this industry
to continue working and contributing to its success.
Today we honour 2 well-known actors of videogames:
Hironobu Sakaguchi, the father of Final Fantasy
and Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of the Gran Turismo series.
The time for videogames has come. It's time for the creation you promote.
Keep on creating. Keep on dreaming. Keep on contributing to this industry's development.
Have a nice ceremony. I hope you all enjoy it. And let's keep on working together.
Er... stereo has failed to the Ministry.
Well, let's give way to... "After giving way... Before giving way..."
Ah, "after the authorities' greeting". That drew my attention because he is 3 times minister.
He is the authorities, 3 in 1.
It's like the Duchess of Alba: 3 times Grandee of Spain.
After the authorities greeting we're going to give the first prizes of the night.
In charge of giving the Best Technology Award,
a round of applause for Francisco Monteverde, CEO of Codice Software.
Thank you very much for welcoming us tonight. I will now mention the nominees for Best Technology.
The Gamelab Award for Best Technology in 2012 goes to...
- "Reality Fight.." - Best Techno...
What?
"Afterzoom" by Abylight
"Freak Wars (Torrente Online 2)" by Virtual Toys
"Micoach Football" by Digital Legends and published by Adidas
"Reality Fighters" by Novarama and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE)
Well, you know now why I wasn't selected for the Oscars ceremony this year.
The award goes to "Reality Fighters".
Novarama's CEO, Daniel Sánchez Crespo, will collect the prize.
Daniel!
Well, first of all we would like to thank the academics who have once again recognized us with this award.
I obviously don't deserve this but the technology team at Novarama,
represented here by Ramón, Álex, Juan and 8 more brains that make an effort every day
in order to get the most beautiful thing in the world: the smile of every child.
Thanks!
Get out.
Let's move on, there are many left.
Next comes the Best Sound Award. And delivering it is no one better than Thiago Cremasco,
general coordinator of Innovation, Convergence and Audiovisual Platforms
of the Secretariat of Audiovisuals of the brazilian Ministry for Culture. All right!
Big title, huh? Very important, indeed.
Well, Best Sound... very good.
Let's see the nominees, ok?
Can we?
Best Sound
"Freak Wars (Torrente Online 2)" by Virtual Toys
"Las aventuras de Tintín" by Ubisoft Barcelona
"New York Crimes" by Pendulo Studios and published by FX Interactive
Come out, ***.
Confess your crime!
"Supermagical" by Super Awesome Hyper Dimensional Mega Team and published by Gala Pocket
And the Best Sound is...
"Freak Wars"
Collects the prize...
The winner...
Come on.
I really didn't expect this.
We didn't bring the team here. Had I known this I would have brought the kid who worked all the sound.
I'd like to thank Fernando, who is a great kid.
He really brought Virtual Toys to another level in the sound department in a spectacular fashion.
Those who haven't seen or heard him I recommend you to download it and give it a try. Thank you all.
All right.
Thiago Cremasco, general coordinator of Innovation, Convergence and Audiovisual Platforms
of the Secretariat of Audiovisuals of the brazilian Ministry for Culture.
When someone asks him "what do you do?"... "Hmmm, Ministry..."
Ok, moving on. Everything's fine. We're going faster and I like that.
We're going to present the award for Best Original Score.
And for this prize I request Óscar Araujo to come on stage,
composer and singer of music and sound for the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences.
Wooooow!
- I'll steal this one from you, Álex. - I didn't know it was mine.
The nominations for Best Original Score are:
Best Original Score
"New York Crimes" by Pendulo Studios and published by FX Interactive
What do they want from us? I don't have any memories. I don't know who I am.
"Push Cars" by RSL Games and Ivanovic Games. Published by RSL Games.
"The Mystery Team: Cazadores de Pistas" by Tonika Games
and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Spain.
"Zack Zero" by Crocodile Entertainment
And the award for Best Original Score goes to...
"New York Crimes" by Pendulo Studios.
He's a very busy guy. He's calling the sound designer, who should be the person collecting this prize.
Hello, Juanmi! Hello, Juanmi, you're making me look bad.
Er... you're making me look bad in front of a lot of people, whose face I can't see.
You're making me look bad in front of a lot of nerds.
Well, uhm, Juanmi wants to thank his wife Laura, his son Pablo
and his great colleague team at Pendulo Studios for this prize. The academics...
I don't know if there's any more people left to be grateful to.
- The piano I suppose. - Yeah, yeah.
He likes the instrument.
Anyway, thanks to all the academics on behalf of Juan Miguel Martín Muñoz,
composer of the score for "New York Crimes". Thank you.
Marvelous! Congratulations. Well deserved. Very, very well deserved.
Óscar, you left without the phone, my god.
Folks, I want to play you a piece.
Don't be scared. When a musician says he's going to play a piece, he means he's about to play a tune.
Ok?
He won't go outside and mess with your car, you know.
It's a classic. "I'm going to play a piece."
Let's have a contest.
This is the theme of a videogame that has marked us all.
The first who guesses it shall raise his hand.
Ok, it's on.
Let's see.
- Super Mario. - Hm, no.
No, but you would have left everyone... you would get laid today.
Of course you'd get laid today! Today is your day, I tell you, man!
- Tetris! - Son of a ***...
This *** song, huh?
How many times did we have it in our minds?
Always.
Tetris, man, gets you hooked for real.
I remember going to bed, closing my eyes and seeing blocks fall.
It was the only thing. No?
It was made for that. So that we couldn't see anything else.
Are the creators here? The creatives? No?
Watch someone putting 8 suitcases, a bike and the cage of a canary in a car
and you will know if you've played a lot of Tetris or not.
That's crazy.
It's a simple game. You have to lay lines and lines of bricks non-stop.
That matched with the spanish character really well. We certainly like laying bricks.
In fact, I think that the construction crisis began with Tetris.
I was a big fan of this game
and I want to dedicate this song to every one that ever got hooked on a game.
Lay...
a backwards "N" and then a "T"
where the stick is.
marching at the end
This *** bricks make me sick to death.
I
fly in my spaceship in the final war
against the Martian.
I smashed myself
really good against a huge meteor
The good thing about videogames is that they have taught generations of young people to use both hands
They only used one before.
Thanks to this we are more ambidextrous.
For example,
we can play the piano with one hand and do something else with the other.
And I don't mean eating Cheetos.
Since where here, we have to sing this song and take it home.
Piece of cake.
It's like "Soy español". It has the same lyrics.
Look. It goes like this
Everybody!
Again!
Zelda Assassin's
GTA Mario Kart
Angry Birds Lara Croft and we're ready
Donkey Kong Walking Dead
The turtles have once again messed everything up.
The keyboard is going to explode I won't get out of this, not even with Angel Cristo
The keyboard is going to explode I won't get out of this, not even with Angel Cristo
The keyboard is going to explode I won't get out of this, not even with Angel Cristo
Ok.
Now that I see you more animated, let's talk about the award for Best Animation.
Take that!
Impressive! This one's mine.
And now, delivering it, José Ángel Palacio
Autodesk M&E Channel Manager.
Good evening, everybody. Another year here. This is the fifth time.
The nominees in the Best Animation category
are:
Best Animation
"Las Aventuras de Tintín" by Ubisoft Barcelona
"Micoach Football" by Digital Legends and published by Adidas
"New York Crimes" by Péndulo Studios and published by FX Interactive
- We have to continue our work, despite the danger - I... will do everything I can.
"Pocoyó Racing" developed and published by Zinkia
Well, and the prize for Best Animation 2012 goes to...
"Las aventuras de Tintín" by Ubisoft Barcelona
Many thanks to the organization for creating this events
that allow us to celebrate our successes together... uh... despite Alex.
Yes, yes, you picked on my son, so...
I obviously dedicate it to all the team and also to my children.
And nothing else. But I'll add that it was a pleasure working on this project, "Tintin".
It allowed our animators to express all their talent.
It's also the first game in Catalan for a console and that's a reason to be proud of.
And nothing else. I'm here with Javier Capel, the producer, and I think he wants to say some words.
I also have our animators here. I'll let Javier introduce them.
Thank you. I wanted to thank all the team for making the effort to be here a couple of hours at least.
Many thanks. I think I speak for the rest of the animation team
when I say it was a pleasure and an honor being able to animate characters like Tintin and Captain Haddock.
Snowy (Milou) and more.
And thanks to the team. Good job.
Er... I think there was a misunderstanding.
I didn't know he was your son.
I thought he was your brother.
And delivering the Art Direction award, a round of applause for José Garasino,
general director of the Film Academy of Spain.
Hello, good evening.
- Hello, Alex. - How are you?
- Very well. About the Goya tickets... - Huh?
- The Goya tickets. - Very hard.
- Yeah... - And it pays to be a supporter, as I can see...
Yes.
The nominees for Best Art Direction are:
Best Art Direction
"Adventure Park" by Pyro Studios and published by IZ
"New York Crimes" by Péndulo Studios and published by FX Interactive
What do they want from us? I don't have any memories. I don't know who I am.
"Supermagical" by Super Awesome Hyper Dimensional Mega Team and published by Gala Pocket
"Zack Zero" by Crocodile Entertainment
And the Best Art Direction 2012 award goes to:
"New York Crimes" by Péndulo Studios and published by FX Interactive.
The same ones?
Marvelous!
This prize is dedicated to Ximo Ferrer and all the Pendulo Studios team.
And to all the people that, like us, want graphic adventure games.
Magnificent! Magnificent.
I like your brief thanks.
Those Goya guys should take a lesson. With all due respect.
With all, all of them.
The Goya awards... that... that event I'll watch at home from now on.
Keep in mind this a script that's written for me. I...
I... people from here, from Barcelona! People from here that write that kind of things!
I don't... I only read it, nothing more.
I thought I had come to a casual event, but I'm risking my career.
Good god.
Well, what do we have here?
My god, I'm very nervous.
It's the turn now for the new batch of creators.
It's the turn for the Best University Project, conceived by students from different spanish universities.
Delivering it will be, a round of applause for Joe Robins and Russ Morris, Community Evangelists of Unity Technologies.
Best University Project
"Forgotten Kodama: The Seed Of Life" by The Hugging Cactus, Universitat Pompeu Fabra
"Star Works" by SW Team, UPC School of Professional & Executive Development
".Heartbeats" by Sebastián Trelles, Universidad Complutense de Madrid
"Galahad's Memories" by Galahad Team, Universidad Complutense de Madrid
You don't know what feels like being up here, when we were among the public only a year ago
with a half finished game and a lot of work to do.
First of all, we would like to show gratitude
to all the members in the Academy who voted for our project. Thanks.
And second, to all the staff and the faculty
of the Master's Degree in Videogame Creation of Pompeu Fabra.
Thanks, without you, this game wouldn't be the same.
And of course, to all of our respective families and friends and partners,
who suffered greatly with this development.
I think we couldn't have survived the whole madness that it was without them.
Thanks to everyone and it seems there will be no way Hugging Cactus will forget this Kodama after all.
Many, many thanks to all of you.
Magnificent!
There you have it: the creators of tomorrow! Yes, sir!
You don't look like the classic geeks, do you?
I like "Física o Química" better. I love it. I love it!
Love it. Congratulations.
Magnificent.
Let's continue with the Best Novel Production. And no one better for its delivery,
I can't imagine anyone better, than Antonio Fernández, General Secretary of DEV.
Thanks to the Academy for inviting me to deliver the prize for Best Novel Production.
And the nominations are:
Best Novel Production
"Cheese Please" by Noob Ware and published by Gamevil
"Kinito Ninja" by Delirium Studios and published by Yubi Games
"Unepic" by Francisco Téllez de Meneses
"Zack Zero" by Crocodile Entertainment
And the Best Novel Production award goes to...
- "Zack Zero" by Crocodile Entertainment. - Yeah!
Be cool.
Well... uh... thanks for this prize, to all the Academy who has voted.
Not long ago people asked me if we thought it was normal, after all this years,
to be nominated as a novel production. And I said "yes".
Actually, this was our first game in 3D. I had done a lot of "PC Fútbol".
My first 3D game... the previous game I had done was in 1987.
So this was our first console game in 3D. And we have learned a lot of things.
Specially after finishing it. It happens to every rookie.
So I think we're on the right track.
Thank you all.
And now it is an honor for me... let's see if I can say it...
to present the Director of Gamelab and President of the Interactive Arts and Sciences Academy.
The man who calls the shots.
Years ago in the USA people said their president was a hawk.
In Spain we had one who was called Bambi. And this one, look at how well everything is put together,
is a wolf, because he is Iván Lobo.
- Boo. - Ah!
Ok, good evening everyone. Thank you for coming. Thank you for taking part in Gamelab in this awards.
I don't want to run my mouth because as you can see, we have more and more prizes every year,
and you are the actual protagonists: every one of you who is here, the finalists and the winners,
the professionals who form the Academy,...
And I just wanted to thank you for your presence, to wish you the best in your respective businesses.
What really makes me happy is knowing that not only are we,
the same people who started meeting at Gamelab 8 years ago, still coming here,
but even more people are attending every time.
More companies, more international participants, more... uh...
well, people who know that the spanish production is one of the best productions in Europe right now.
Let us continue following this progression for many years. Congratulations to you all, really. Thank you.
I was a bit shocked, wasn't I?
I realized this song...
has been ripped off.
I am...
It isn't the most appropriate song for a beer, but...
Excuse me, I'm falling asleep.
I mean...
it sucks that songs stick to you.
Did it ever happen to you?
You're walking across the street, going somewhere and someone walks by you
whistling, humming, singing a melody, that gets stuck in your brain for the rest of the day.
And you can't help repeating it over and over again.
It gets to you, doesn't it?
It gets to you because, not only are they not Mozart or Beethoven, no.
They are the filthiest songs in the market.
And you realize that after singing it for three hours.
You stop and ask "Who the hell stuck this to me? How long have I been singing? Who may have heard me?".
I have a theory for that.
If a melody, in whichever manner, passes near you,
you hear it, recognize it, is left unfinished and disappears, your mind will continue singing it,
regardless of your body or the rest of your mind. Your mind will go continue singing that song
and there's nothing you can do to avoid that.
And today, we're going to check that right here.
I invite you to participate in an experiment with me.
An awesome experiment that, if you follow my instructions carefully, you will see that
not only can it be wonderful but also nearly orgiastic. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!
Ok, we'll divide this experiment in 3 basic parts. And we'll start with the first one, why not?
In this first part of the experiment I will sing the start of a well-known song.
At some point I will shut up and we'll see who has the guts to avoid continuing that song with his mind.
Your contribution here is quite simple. All I ask you to do is to be silent and listening while I sing.
And when I stop singing you should remain the same: silent, focused, trying not to continue the song.
Ok?
Not hard, is it?
Don't cheat, please. This is not a competition. I don't want to see anyone whispering.
Try it! Ok?
Let's go! For this first part of the experiment we'll resort to a classic children's tune.
It goes like this.
The patio of my house is peculiar.
When it rains it gets wet like any other.
- Cheater! - What happened?
Raise your hand those who didn't mentally sing "duck and duck once again".
It's impossible, my friend! Even when hummed!
We can suppress singing but not our mind. I don't know, it can't, with this thing inside you. You can't.
It's something as impossible as this. Who can resist continuing something like...?
It's impossible, friends! Can you see that? It must be finished at all costs!
With a finger concealed, with your eye, with the pancreas. It doesn't matter!
This was the first part. At this point I said: "That's interesting. Could we investigate any further?"
We can!
And that's what we're going to do in this second part.
Because now we won't fight our minds. You've seen that's impossible.
So I'll ask you to do exactly the opposite. I want you all to sing with your minds together.
Tonight, I would like to get a giant and marvelous mental choir!
For this, I will sing the start of another well known song.
In a given time I'll shut up and you will continue singing it in silence with your minds.
You will freak out, big time.
And we have a simultaneous translator here, huh?
He must be going nuts.
All right? Let's go.
In this second part we'll pay homage to the greatest genius of all: Mozart.
Marvelous! Applaud yourselves!
Awesome. I could hang my keys. Hang them, I tell you.
Wonderful, isn't it?
This is really cool, isn't it? We could call this "The Mental Karaoke".
Can you imagine a Mental Karaoke competition?
Who would be the judge? Anthony Blake?
The other day someone told me: "You sure like to mess around."
Mess around? Do you think we were messing around a moment ago?
Not only do I think it's silly, I also believe it's wonderful.
For me this means... during this... this seconds in silence we had here,
all of your minds, all of the minds we have here today, this 500 minds... or less that are here today,
were connected to the same thing. All of your minds connected, singing the same.
Don't you think it's wonderful?
Well... all of them... I don't know. Because I said Mozart and I saw some faces go like this...
Now you'll say: "Can you prove it?" You can!
And that's what we're going to do next.
In this third and final part of the experiment, we're all going to sing with our minds.
What's more, we're going to check and prove we all sang with our minds together.
For this, I'll sing another well known tune. In a given moment, I will shut up.
And everyone will continue singing the song in silence with their minds.
And a little bit later I will do this clear gesture.
When I make this clear gesture you will all scream out loud the part of the song
you think is correct at that very moment.
How'd you like them apples?
Good, huh?
They'll think it's hard or impossible. Error! If you follow my instructions faithfully
you'll see it can turn into something wonderful. Ok?
Please, don't cheat, ok? In one go, ok?
Let's do this. Look, nothing can happen here. There can't be any mistakes.
2 things can happen: The first one or "A" is when I do this clear gesture
everyone stays silent and... we don't hear ***. It would be a failure, why would we do this?
But "B" could also happen. Sorry, "B". That when I do this clear gesture everyone screams.
And I mean scream exactly the same part of the song.
At that moment... we can jack off right here.
All right! I see that worked as an incentive! Ok.
Everybody motivate themselves however they like.
What's up? I have some Cheetos back there.
I'll bring them out.
Let's go. For this third and final part of the experiment I will mark the time, ok?
Why? Because my annoying family wants me to do it.
Come on. Stay cool. Stay cool.
Because you won't be seeing this in a long time.
Come on.
Everybody ready?
Here we go.
Hello, Mr. Joseph. Hello, Mr. Joe
Goodbye, Mr. Joe.
Wonderful! Bravo!
I'll be honest: there was some hesitation.
No? Like... eh... byemrjoe!
Look, I don't care. You did a great job. And this game I invented, I give it to you all
so that you can use in parties, first communions, friend meetings, no problem. Ok?
With this song or any other. You'll see the fun you'll have.
If you want you can use it to *** people off.
For you who work in teams a lot it's perfect.
Is there someone *** around? There you go.
How do you do it? For example, look.
You're riding the bus and you're sitting next to someone you don't like.
You don't know him... but you don't like him.
Why? Because he has a moustache and that...
Ok? Once you've picked the victim, you choose the most disgusting song you know.
Your moment will come when you arrive at your stop. He will remain seated.
You will move as if you were about to get off. But right at the door, turn around and...
Bulería, bulería.
The first reaction of the guy can be...
Legend Award Hironobu Sakaguchi
Ok, the time has come for one of the most important moments in the ceremony.
The moment in which we will give the first special prize of the night to a living legend in videogames.
Delivering it, no one better than Carles Santamaría, director of Ficomic.
This gaps must be filled in, next time.
Good evening.
It is an honor as director of Ficomic
and as director of the Salón Internacional del Cómic de Barcelona
and also as director of the Salón del Manga, to be here with you,
because we have started a long friendship with Gamelab, thanks to the coincidences.
There are more things that unite us than those that separate us.
We have drawing as a creative conceptual base.
We also have the sequential language that unites videogames with comics.
That's the reason why we're here. Thanks to Iván, to Gonzalo, who we have been working with for months.
The Legend Award goes to Mr. Hironobu Sakaguchi.
To mention Final Fantasy means not only mentioning a model for videogames,
but also an example of popular culture.
Because in this videogame, which has been adapted to film, we have culture, creation, industry,
united by Sakaguchi's unique talent. Sakaguchi is one of those creators
that has been able to reinvent himself. That has been able to revolutionize videogames.
And for all that Gamelab gives the Legend Award to Mr. Sakaguchi-san,
who we ask to come onstage, please.
Thank you.
I didn't know this was going to be such a fun party. I had this serious speech prepared.
Not only that, I wrote it in English. I will read it.
I'll try to make it short.
Thanks for the invitation to Gamelab. It is an honor for me to receive this award
and I'm very proud to be here.
Now that I think about it, I've devoted 30 years of my life to videogames
and I'm more than happy. When I was 20 years old, I found the Apple II and its videogames.
I found digital technology and programs. When I got to know that I could control it, I was very happy.
Ok, you've understood that. After 30 years, I'm still the same person.
The only thing that has change could be grey hair and gut.
In the course of this professional career I've encountered technological advances,
like 3D special effects that were applied to Final Fantasy VII, and also the Internet revolution.
Looking back, me and my team have been working every day to integrate this new technologies.
To make this possible it's necessary to work with experts in every field.
This people have become very close friends. We keep this friendship alive.
We have big discussions in BBQs in Honolulu.
It's a bit long but I'll finish right now.
Videogames have taught me many things, like how to make people have fun
or the difficulty in entertaining people with games. Also the joy of sharing with friends, trust,
but most of all the patience to be successful.
You always find walls or obstacles. But there's always a way to jump over and overcome them.
It is important to never give up in the face of adversity.
Nowadays, I still have this concepts in mind when I start new projects.
Lastly, I'm very proud to have been able to dedicate 30 years to this field.
I'm also thankful to have the chance to meet videogame fans and professionals of various sectors.
I'd like to dedicate this award to them. Thank you very much.
