The government has controlled all spheres of Cuban culture and Cuban arts for decades,
suffocating Cuban artists' creations and their legitimate production.
From the Island, alternative musicians tell their stories and complain about
how impossible it is to access equipment to tape and disseminate their music.
This report comes from Desde Adentro.
According to the State, immense educational efforts have been realized in the creation
of new art instructor schools, as well as in the creation of institutes of research and development
of the informative sciences, like the U.S.I. But then, where are the programs?
Where can they be acquired? And in the case of the art instructors, once
they encourage interest in this; where can one purchase the instruments at
accessible prices? Are the studios of the State within reach of the young artists?
accessible prices? Are the studios of the State within reach of the young artists?
selected by the State. They sell themselves to the majority of the State studios.
One has to have a company to get access to the studios. For example,
the Brin is their place in the company. To tape reggaeton, fans look for
studios in which to tape as is the example
in Zum and the Zanabum. All of the studios have been created from the Zum movement
by different producers. One cannot sing something that goes against
their ideology and without their leverage. Where do the reggateoneros
the ones from hip-hop or any other Cuban musical
genre, who are not professional, get to record their songs? Where, in what places do they tape?
They use home studios with egg boxes and non-professional microphones.
There are also famous cuban artists who are popular. Their voices sound very high-pitched,
and they do not have the possibility of taping in a studio.
As for subjects of those video clips, for example, the ones which are on television, are
those video clips financed by the State of finance or by the artists?
Financed by the artists. In great majority they cost between
$2,500 and $4,000 dollars. Luckily, talent, like thought is impossible
to yank away, and as an old saying goes, 'he who perseveres, triumphs'.
It is not for lack of imagination that our young artists will give up.
Maybe, through these alternative mediums, they can achieve their dreams.
Hopefully, it will be that way. Of course they deserve it.
