In this video I will show you how to use a Wiki
A wiki is a set of web pages that allows people to contribute online
and keeps a record of the changes that are made
The wiki activity allows you to create a wiki either individually or as
a group depending on how your Topic Coordinator has set it up
In this demonstration, we are going to look at a group wiki
We are going to begin at your topic. You can see it is a wiki activity by this icon.
We are going to go to this wiki called 'The role of medical professionals'
If the Topic Coordinator has given you an empty wiki, then you'll enter the wiki in
edit mode
In this example the front page of the wiki is called 'Medical professionals'
and so you are editing the page 'Medical Professionals'
Lets add some content to the page
Please see the video 'HTML editor' for more information on using the HTML editor
Lets assume that you have been asked to work in a group
to build a wiki, explaining the roles of all of the medical professionals you can think
of
We can now make a page for each profession by adding double square brackets around each
one in the list
This is the only difference between an HTML editor in a wiki and an HTML editor in other
locations
By bracketing words in the wiki, you create a new page in the wiki if it doesn't already
exist
If the page already exists, it will create a link to that page
Be aware, that the use of square brackets is case sensitive
For example, if you use captial D for 'Doctors', any links to this page will need a capital
D
Using a lower case 'd' will not create a link to this page, but infact create a new page
within the wiki
Don't forget to scroll down to click save
We are now in View mode. You can see that because the view tab is highlighted
This is where you would have gone if your Topic Coorindator had set up a structure within
the wiki
By clicking on the links, you'll go to the relevant pages in the wiki
If the page is blank, it opens in edit mode
If the writing is italicised, it means there is a link but there is no content on the page
yet
Click on the link. You then click create page
You can now add some content to this page in the wiki - including a video
Don't forget to save. For further information on adding multimedia
please see our tip sheet in the Student Support site
To get back to the front page, click on the title in the breadcrumbs
Similarly, you can create some content about nurses
I will add a file
And save
Lets go back to the front page via the breadcrumbs
Now you have seen 'View' and 'Edit' mode
The other tabs are 'Comment', 'History', 'Map' and 'Files'
Comments is where the people in your group or the teaching staff can make comments
I will click on the 'Doctors' page and see the comments
You can see another student in this tutorial group has made a change and commented on it
This history tab displays the version number and date that each change was made in the
wiki
Be aware that other students in your group can edit the wiki while you are editing
However they will not be able to edit the same page as you at the same time
Once you click on edit, the page will be locked for editing by others
In the 'History' tab, you can compare selected versions and it will show you what changes
have been made
By going to the 'Map', a list of all of the pages in the wiki are displayed in alphabetical
order
Other functions are also available here
The 'Files' tab shows you any files that have been uploaded to the wiki
such as Word documents or PDF's
You can put these in through the HTML editor
An individual wiki works in exactly the same way as a group wiki
Except that only one person, you, can contribute
This type of wiki might be used for a reflective journal
