I talked about the fragile nature of Pillar and Scroll clocks and not only were they fragile,
but they were relatively expensive to make. There was a lot of sort of fancy carpentry
and joinery that took place in making a Pillar and Scroll clock. The next type of clock that
came in reaction to trying to make it a little stronger Case, a little more affordable, was,
which often called a Transition Case clock. Where it still has Pillars, but you can see
the feet in this, in this Paw version here, still carved, but certainly much stronger.
Those feet are not going to snap off the same way that our Pillar and Scroll's feet might,
and also up top here, it's a simpler crest and scroll arraignment up top. Again we see
our reverse painted, it's sometimes called Eglomise, a French term for revers painted
glass panels down there. These were usually painted by young women at the time, maybe
they were paid two or three cents each for them. But you ask why would they paint on
the back of the glass? Obviously it would protect it as well as giving the, the painting
a little more shininess and vibrancy. The paint would be inside so if you wanted to
clean the glass, you weren't going to clean the painting away, it was a way of protecting
it. This is a reverse paint glass tablet, which again you can see is, has started to
flake off, it does happen with these. This is, that paint's been on there a long time,
but here's the back of the glass, and you can see that the process is a little tricky,
especially if you're just starting out. Because you have to actually have to paint in reverse
order. Unlike an oil painting or watercolor, where you go background to foreground. This
actually has to be foreground to background so that the scene is applied in a way that
you could then see it, when you turn around and look at it from the front. You often find
places where the paint is flaking away, there are skilled people, I could recommend a few,
who are good at either repainting these entire glasses, if they're badly flaked, or in painting
the places where the paint has flaked off. So you can retain basically an original painting
along with having a beautiful early clock.
