The holiday season is a time of giving. It's warm. It's exciting.
Everybody's in a better mood. But it's also a time of greater needs, and
nowhere are those needs more evident than with children.
Children from single parent homes and distress situations have it even
harder this time of year. They are very conscious of the holidays. They see
the advertisements, and they know what other families are doing.
So this year Kars for Kids tried something new. Not only are we helping
children with holiday packages, but we also gave a classroom of young girls
the opportunity to help us make the thousands of gift packages that we send
out. Their teacher told us it was the best out-of-classroom learning
experience they'd had all year to receive the gift of giving.
Kars for Kids offers year round counseling to children. But it's nice to also
imagine their faces when they open these holiday packages. A little extra
happiness for a child in need and it goes a long way.
Sure it was more difficult for us supervising a classroom of middle school
kids, but it taught us something too. We need to create a giving culture,
and it all starts with grass roots efforts.
