In this video we're going to build a coffee table. Something you can be proud of in your
shed or in your house, or whatever. And how we're going to do it is we're just going to
measure our timber, going to build our frame, and then we're going to put a nice veneer
top on her. You can use any sort of timber you like, but that's what we're going to use
today to show you the basic principles of how to make a fantastic coffee table. So let's
get into it.
Now the equipment you need to build this coffee table is, a jig saw, a cordless drill, chisels,
a clamp, hand saw, a set square, tape measure, drill bits, a hammer, some screws, a Phillips
head screw driver, some PVC glue and a rag to clean it up with, some sanding paper, and
last but not least is your safety equipment, your goggles, your ear muffs, and your dust
mask. Now the materials we're using today is we're using all pine for the base, and
for our top we're using a veneered particle board. Make sure that you pick a particle
board [colour] that's veneered that you can iron on the edging. You can use any type of
timber on the top, red gum, anything you like. But today we're using veneered particle board.
OK, we'll now go ahead and we'll measure up all our timber. This piece will be for the
legs. This piece will be for the centre plane, these will be the supports for the table.
So we'll go ahead and measure up. You can measure the distance any length you like,
today I'm going to use 430 high, but as I say you can use anything you like, any height.
So that will be one leg, I'll cut that, but we have rebate it in to do the centre support,
which I'm going to measure out at one meter. I'm also going to make it a bit fancy and
just put a slight angle cut on the edge to make it look a bit neater rather than just
straight edges. I'm going to measure off 100 mil, and take that up to the corner. I'll
do that on both ends.
I'm now going to cut the legs out, and then I'm going to cut the centre support plane.
Now that we've cut our legs and our centre support, we're going to cut in the rebate
now, and we're going to, by using the centre support, place that in the middle of your
leg and then just draw around where your centre support plane is going to go into. Then it's
just a matter of cutting down, three or four cuts down, choose [a layer to] rebate, and
then the centre support slots into the rebate. And then you just repeat the same on the other
side.
I've now measured the table supports, by measuring from the rebate out to the edge. Now all we
have to do is glue and screw it. I'm just using PVC glue, and we clamp it down, make
sure everything's nice and flush. We've now finished making the legs. We've done the rebate,
and we've got the centre support ready. We've put in the table top support, now all we do
is we turn it upside down, place it on the table top, and then we measure all the way
around so that the whole thing is in the centre. Once that's done we then glue and screw it
into the support stand. With this one you would need to iron on your edging around here
just to finish it off.
And that's your table finished. If you need any more help on this project come in down
