Welcome to the APSCo latest news summary, produced by HR & Recruiter TV and sponsored
by the Technology In Recruitment Alliance. We start with the latest APSCo monthly trends
which show it’s a great time to be in marketing as demand for talent is outstripping supply.
Overall permanent placements in the Marketing sector have fallen by almost a fifth in the
last three months but actual job openings grew by 1% pointing to an on-going scarcity
of available candidates. While this is partly being plugged by the professional temporary
market which has shown increases in job openings and placements of 4 and 8% respectively, it
appears that for the marketing and media sector the war for talent is very much alive and
well. Earlier this month George Osborne announced
the Spring Budget and APSCo Chief Executive Ann Swain responded saying the recruitment
industry will be disappointed by the growth figures unveiled by the Chancellor, but a
fiscally neutral Budget with positive measures for business is good news. If the Chancellor
is serious about finding a plan for growth, he needs to get behind the engine of growth
in the UK – ‘the flexible labour market’. While on the subject of government, APSCo
welcomed the Department for Business Innovation & Skills to its March Members Meeting. The
event included a panel discussion on the hottest topic in recruitment right now – ‘the
Consultation on reforming the regulatory framework for employment agencies and employment businesses’.
Panel members on the lively and positive debate included Dr Robert Porteous, Head of Strategy
at the Labour Market Directorate at BIS and Steve Keeler Head of The Employment Agency
Standards Inspectorate. Dr Porteus said that if there was one thing
he would take away from the meeting, it was just how different this ‘professional market’
was – a comment that earned him a rousing round of applause! A good sign for the professional
recruitment market indeed. A full summary of the event is available on the APSCo website.
On a lighter note, we’re pleased to hear that so many APSCo members raised money for
Comic Relief and ChildLine: eSynergy Solutions surprised the APSCo team
at their offices on Red Nose Day in their fancy dress. Despite it raining on the day
and temperatures being low, eSynergy braved the elements and raised a fantastic £2,125.20
on the day. Phaidon International held an office bake
off on and the tasty treats helped raise an impressive £236,77 for ChildLine.
Likewise, the F10 group cooked cakes and curry and raised over £250 just from their own
staff on the day. In the name of charity IT Talent Solutions
went against their usual mantra of ‘diversity, personality and innovation’ and reinvented
themselves in the image of music icons (just for the day).
The team at Liquid Friday filmed a Harlem Shake video to raise money. The video on available
on YouTube. And finally Jam Recruitment hosted a Red Nose
fundraising day at both their London and Manchester offices, which involved a Wii dance off, quizzes,
bake sale, press up challenges and more! Together, Jam Recruitment raised an impressive £500.
