>> York University received funding for a chair
in autism spectrum disorders treatment and care research.
The Canadian government and its partners have committed one
million dollars over five years to support the chair.
York University and its community partner The Spectrum
of Hope Autism Foundation committed to matching the funds.
>> Our researchers are committed to collaborating
with government, international organizations, industry partners
and other academic institutions to advance knowledge
and push beyond the traditional research methods.
>> With this research the chair
and his team will evaluate novel treatment strategies
to help youth and adults with ASD deal with these issues,
as well as other stressful events like bullying,
and find ways to improve health care for all.
>> York University is up to the challenge.
We've got one of the leading groups of researchers
and educators globally in area of autism,
running from basic science on the genetics
through the social clinical conditions clinical
interventions, and also focusing from the community perspective
and knowledge mobilization.
The project partners include The Canadian Institute
of Health Research, Health Canada, NeuroDevNet,
Autism Speaks Canada, Canadian Autism Spectrum Disorders
Alliance, and the Sinneave Family Foundation.
>> I'm here really as a member of parliament, but I'm here
as a parent of a child with autism and this is so important
for us to come to an event like this and see something coming
out of those conversations is really fantastic and for those
of you that are parents you know the importance of this.
>> As recipient of the chair, Jonathan Weiss
and his team will study innovative approaches
to expand treatment in care research
to address mental health problems in Canadians
with autism across their life span.
>> One of the main goals of this chair is not only for us
to focus on mental health and AST, which we will do,
but also to connect everyone to the science, the good,
the strong science that's happening
in our country around this issue.
