Hi - I'm David Leibowitz.
At Lakelaw we're specialized, but not too specialized. We focus our work of course,
on the areas of bankruptcy and foreclosure defense. But bankruptcy and foreclosure
defense in Chicago frequently takes us other places. What do I mean by that? Lots of times,
people want to prepare to avoid bankruptcy, and so they would like to protect their assets.
Asset protection requires estate planning, and so we do a little bit of that.
In addition, sometimes people are not concerned so much about asset protection for bankruptcy,
but asset protection in the event of their getting older. They want to
protect themselves for Medicaid purposes. Elder law has become an area where we practice
as well.
Another thing that we found out was that bankruptcy and probate have a lot in-common. Why? Probate
is basically bankruptcy for dead people. It involves a special code, the probate code,
a special court, the probate court, and wills and trusts and estates are not so different
than bankruptcy plans. The knowledge that we have in bankruptcy has helped us in probate.
Then, in the mortgage foreclosure field, we find that we have been involved in the buying
and selling of real estate. Well, buying and selling of real estate short
sales requires that we do some real estate transactions. In bankruptcy, we buy and sell
assets all of the time, so you have to have asset purchases and sales. We know
small businesses. We can start them up, and we can close them down too. Sometimes, when
we represent not-for-profit organizations, we help organize those and close them down
too.
Even though we are a firm that focuses on bankruptcy and foreclosure defense, you will
find that there are many other things that we do that might be helpful to you.
We'd like to think of you as our clients, and we'd like to think of us as your lawyers.
So if something else comes up that's not something that we do particularly, let us know.
We know people that are the best of the best in every area of law, and we will find them,
put them on your case, and make sure they do what's supposed to be done for you.
