Hello there. It's a pleasure to meet you
My name is Gloson Teh You Heng. You can call me Gloson
I'm currently fourteen years old and I am from
Malaysia -laysia -laysia
I'm interested in joining Ravensbourne because I think it has everything I am passionate about
Here's how I came to know about this amazing university
There was a UK education exhibiton from 10 to 11 March 2012
So, I took a train
toooooooooooo
the
Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre!
Yay
I went around the exhibition, and then I reached Ravensbourne
When I looked around, it seemed that it had everything I was passionate about!
--from music and sound to design, web, and filmmaking
I knew it was the best place to be
to take up the Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (Media Production)
After I complete it, I plan to earn a
Bachelor's Degree in Music Production for Media
Let me tell you my story
On 29 December 2009, I headed to an exhibition called "Muzika: The Science of Music"
There was one exhibit that fascinated me the most
It explored how music enhanced film
The exhibit played this same scene three times, but with different soundtracks
Each soundtrack evoked a different reaction from the viewer
Music composition has been my passion since I was 11 years old
I was amazed by how music can add to the mood created by a certain situation
Music can accentuate the joyful bounce of a poem
or the drama of an intense situation
It astounds me how one can create majestic music from a touching scene
I love to compose music because it allows me to channel my emotions, ideas and feelings
into something creative and positive that brings joy to people
I did my first film scoring when I was 11 years old
After my first poetry book was published, I decided to start making a DVD of my book
Firstly, I recited the poems
Then, I played the music I composed with a Casio CTK-481 electric keyboard
I would become a millionaire
who owned a great big home!
To mix the audio, I used Steinberg Wavelab, an audio editing software
When I was 12, I wrote and composed
"Kita 1Malaysia", a song promoting Malaysian harmony
I created its orchestral instrumental using Musescore, a music notation software
Even though at first I knew only some basic music theory
I explored the software and gained much more knowledge in theory
I added to my musical vocabulary terms like arpeggio, glissando and tremolo
I experimented with a MIDI orchestra
and observed the different effects of various combinations of instruments
From there, I've gained more experience in composition, something I enjoy a lot
When I made my first short film, "The Highest Skyscraper on Earth"
I used my keyboard to play the music I composed for it
It was a really fun process, and it made me more experienced in filmmaking, video-editing, and music composition
I like to promote musical people too
Since my little brother liked hip hop dancing and my schoolmate liked comedic singing
I created Youtube channels and also Facebook pages for both of them
I branded them as "Rockson Rocks On" and "The Annoying Singer", respectively
There was one video in which the Annoying Singer sings Taio Cruz' "Higher" while being blasted off to the sky
Well, I decided to compose my rendition of that song's instrumental
Using Musescore, I made my composition on six tracks:
Violins 1, violins 2, horn, synthesizer, timpani and voice
I shared it with my violinist friend
who was very impressed and was surprised that I composed it in quite a short time (about 1 hour)
She showed it to her Yamaha Music School composition teacher, who called me a prodigy
Well, thanks!
By the way, music composition is something I taught myself
I have never taken any composition classes
I learn by listening to other music, like film soundtracks
Two of my favourite film composers are John Williams and Howard Goodall
Some of their soundtracks like "Jurassic Park Theme" and "Mad Pianos" are amazing
They give me goosebumps!
I cherish being a creative person very much
Other than music composing, I like writing poetry
blogging, making films, photography
and giving inspirational speeches to primary schools
I was featured in the press for performing my poem to the Prime Minister and his wife
I was also awarded the national record, "Youngest Published Poet", by the Malaysia Book of Records
I have uploaded to Youtube two videos of me singing a four-part multitrack I arranged
I plan to create another channel where I will recite my poems with self-composed music
- He eats them everyday
He even tried to juggle them
and kicked them yesterday
I believe it will inspire and bring joy to the viewers as well as build me up
to become a music composer, filmmaker and creative writer who will make a great impact
Therefore, it is my heart's desire to join Ravensbourne
I am thrilled because it is a world-class digital destination that specialises in all my passions
With its sleek and professional facilities, I truly believe
Ravensbourne provides the most creative environment for me to excel
With that, I thank you so much for watching this video and for getting to know me
I really appreciate your support
Bye!
