Lloyd International Honors College has a number of extraordinary benefits for highly talented
students who come to the university
Every student in the honors college in good standing has the opportunity to study overseas and
we provide
subsidies
for them to do that
They can pick from about 90 exchange programs around the world
They also have all of their honors classes in small numbers
The classes are seminar fashion
never more than twenty five students
always taught by our best faculty.
In an honors course usually, because you're an honors student
which means you are the brightest of the bright that are here at UNCG
there is usually a little more meaningful work that goes into the course. That student that has the
honors contract
is doing something above and beyond
what the rest of the students are doing in the class. Sometimes it's a more involved
assignment
more detailed readings, but something that's going to be more challenging for that honors student.
For me the honors college
allows me to customize my education here
I think it's really given me an advantage
moving into
the job market or to graduate school because of
the higher level of learning that I have been able to do
The honors college is a great opportunity for students who are trying to go above and beyond
and it also provides numerous opportunities to meet with scholars all over the world
If you just read about something
if you just hear about something but don't experience it firsthand you don't retain it
Hands on experiences such as service-learning, study abroad are vitally important for students
I had the opportunity to study abroad in France this past spring and I think the experience was
invaluable
I was able to really hone my
foreign language speaking skills but in addition to that it was a period of self discovery for me
and I think that's really broadened
my scope and my outlook on life.
Study abroad was a great experience for me because
I got to
interact with so many people
from all over the world
in my school and then on top of that I got to interact with people
that lived the country
The honors college has given me so many chances to tailor my education to my interests through
independent study
through studying abroad and I studied abroad in southwest Wales a little village called Carmarthen but
I really enjoyed the experience. I found some of the same elements of community there
that I found at UNCG.
With respect to study abroad
we know that all of our students live and
will live throughout their careers
in a global
community
and it's extremely important while they're here
that they learn about other cultures, that they learn another language, that they
have the opportunity to live,
study and work
in a different cultural environment
The reason that we are embarking on the living-learning community initiative
is that first of all we know
through research
we know that students
who live in these communities
get better grades
we know that they are graduating at higher levels
and we just know that all the academic indicators
relative to any measures that we apply
go up when students are in these living-learning communities.
The living-learning community really was essential
to my decision to come to UNCG. I knew that
I wanted to be a part
of a living learning community, that I wanted
an atmosphere both in the classroom and where I lived
of motivated students who were engaged
and who I could have discussions with about hot topics or current events
or what we were learning in class
Being a part of the living and learning community for me was a great experience. It was like
home away from home because
I had so many friends that I took classes with, that I did laundry with, that I ate food with. They just became a part of my family
Whether you choose to live in a learning community, study abroad
participate in the honors college
or do all of these things, we hope you'll take advantage of the hands-on learning opportunities that
allow you to explore your interests
and prepare not just for the first job, but for life.
