Interlibrary Loan for Distance Students: Borrowing Books Using WorldCat
Welcome to our video demonstrating the process for distance education students to submit
an interlibrary loan request for a book not located in the Goucher Library.
If you are a MAC user, begin your search in the Firefox browser.
If you are a WINDOWS user, begin your search in the Internet Explorer browser.
We'll go to the Goucher Library home page, www.goucher.edu/library.
From the home page, look under the RESEARCH HELP tab to find the link to Off-Campus Access.
Click "Off-Campus Access to Library Databases". Under "Preferred Method: Web Login", click
on the red "click here" link in the middle of the page.
In the Login Box that pops up, be sure the Group "Research_Databases" is already
set in the drop down box. Enter your Goucher email USERNAME and PASSWORD and then click
the Login button. Click on "Goucher Library?Articles and Databases".
MAC users will receive a pop-up message asking them to open tunnel_jnlp.mac. Open this file
and a new Firefox window will open with the Articles and Databases page. Opening the jnlp
file will be required each time the remote Articles and Databases site is accessed.
Most WINDOWS users will receive a pop-up message asking them to open the Internet Explorer
Add-on Installer. Open this file and a new window will open with the Articles and Databases
page. Opening the Add-On Installer will be required each time the remote Articles and
Databases site is accessed. From the Databases A-Z page scroll down to
the W's to find a link to WorldCat Classic. Clicking on this link will take you to the
WorldCat search page. In WorldCat you can search for books just as you would in the
Goucher Library Catalog by entering keywords, author name, or title.
Today we're looking for the book Imperial Spoils by Christopher Hitchens. Since we know
the title, we'll be doing a title search. Click on the search button to run your search.
Click on the title of the book you are interested in to see the full record, in this case the
first record. Once you have selected the book and double
checked that it is the correct one, click on the ILL button at the top of the record.
It should look like two buildings with arrows going between them.
Checking on the ILL button will take you to our request form. Here's where it gets tricky.
You have to remember to enter the name of the Distance Learning Librarian, Yvonne Lev.
Then you put in your own address, telephone number and email. For status, select "graduate
program". You will put your own name and program name in the Comments Section of the
form. Click submit.
Once your request has been submitted it will be processed by the library and Yvonne will
mail the book to your home address or will hold it for pick up at the library if you
live locally.
