My name is Ryan Wells. I am the owner of a fish store located in Lindon, Utah called
Reef Runners. Taking care of a hermit crab in salt water is virtually foolproof. The
only thing you have to make sure of is that you have fish or other types of animals that
you feed so there is adequate food in there for your hermit crabs to scavenge off of.
These are scavengers and so often just feed off of extra fish food, fish waste or any
other kind of organic compound breaking down. Do keep in mind, however, that if there is
not enough food, they will tend to prey on other snails and other small forms of life,
even each other. So it is important that there is enough food in there to scavenge off of.
They relatively are very small. There are some larger species of hermit crabs in salt
water tanks that are not considered reef safe. So if you have a fish only system, you can
get some of these larger hermit crabs that make excellent cleaners for a fish only system.
