It's been an interesting week in the markets with some
significant highs. But where do we go from here? Welcome to USAA's market commentary.
I'm Rosenda Rios.
Dow Jones topped it off nicely on Tuesday but we still have a
risk overseas. With us, to get a handle, Regina Schafer with
USAA Investments. Regina, thank you so much for joining us.
So let's go ahead and talk about those highs in the market and
the equity markets too.
Yeah, so you're right, it's been a very strong market in the
equities this week. The Dow topped Tuesday at 15,000 and
since then we've seen new market highs. The Fed has
reiterated their QE or quantitative easing, which has really
helped support these stronger markets.
Yeah, pretty good showing this week. So playing the devil's
advocate there's got to be some risks. I mentioned overseas
risks; what are we looking at? What are the warning signs?
So if you look at the big picture there has been some positive
news. For example, last week the unemployment numbers were
better than expected, as well as housing remains a strength in
our market. But on the other side you're right:
manufacturing has been weak. There's still risk in European
and the European economies. And we still haven't seen the
full impact of the sequester, or the higher tax rates.
So right now I would say that we're cautious. And in fact
recently in our discretionary accounts we've taken just a
little bit of risk off the table.
Okay. Well those are areas obviously we're going to be
watching closely. So let's go ahead and pull out the
periscope: what are we looking at on the horizon?
So next week we have a lot of economic data being announced.
We're going to see if the housing market is still as strong.
We'll also see retail sales and if and how the consumer is
spending, along with a lot of other economic data that could
point the direction of our markets.
All right, we'll be keeping tabs on all of that. And thank
you Regina very much for your information.
And we want to thank you for joining us. We think it's
