If medical doctors in the country go on strike as planned next week, the government says
it will punish them to the full extent of the law.
The Korean Medical Association announced earlier this week that they will stop providing medical
services starting this coming Monday in protest of a government plan to introduce for-profit
hospitals and a telemedicine system. The association says the moves would impair
the quality of medical services. Health and Welfare Minister Moon Hyung-pyo
has called for dialogue over the issue, and said a walk-out would only stand to inconvenience
patients. To respond to the pending strike, the health
ministry and related organizations, such as the Supreme Prosecutors Office and the National
Police Agency, plan to coordinate their efforts.
