Hi, this is Miranda Thacker with your KYTC Minute.
After more than two years of construction, another important milestone was recently accomplished
on the Milton Madison Bridge Project.
Traffic on the bridge -- which carries U.S. 421 between Milton, Kentucky and Madison,
Indiana -- was recently switched from the old to the new span.
The old bridge truss will be demolished but the existing piers are being strengthened
and will be reused.
Later this summer, the new 2,400-foot-long bridge will be slid from its current temporary
piers to those original -- reinforced piers.
This innovative multistep process of bridge replacement has allowed the Milton Madison
Bridge to remain open during construction.
Otherwise, Kentucky and Indiana may have been without a U.S. 421 bridge for more than a
year.
The Milton Madison Bridge Project has received numerous awards -- including being named one
of the top 10 bridge projects in the country for 2012 by Roads and Bridges Magazine.
