Each of these apartments is ready to use,
This is a sort of "prêt-a-porter" architecture
The inhabitants were able to choose their homes from among the different options
available based on their own personal preferences
Outside: a Meccano, pieces in a kit that fit together
Cabins equipped with everything you need.
Inside, mobile and flexible, things can easily be changed,
25 students started this project with their tutor (reyesJM).
It had to be built with compatible components from a catalogue.
On the second Monday of assembly, the cabins began to arrive from IDM
They were equipped with circuits, and all the necessary fittings
A mixed structure built the week before waits for the 3D components
to take their place in the system. (A bolted steel frame with plywood board floors on laminated wood beams.)
Laminated wood beams support the boards in the central area of the system
There are 19 different cabin designs.
Once all the cabins have arrived, the site managers give the instructions
for each one to be put in the right place
A standard fork lift truck does the work
Electricity and plumbing are ready and waiting to be plugged in
Basically, it is a question of taking advantage of the benefits of open manufacturing
to obtain Meccanos that can be dismantled, and easily handled by the user.
The technology used to achieve this already exists in other fields of construction and industry.
It only has to be transferred to the domestic sphere.
Yes, initially cultural innovation is shocking
But with our d_21 at IFEMA we realized that most visitors were willing
to occupy the dwellings because they were aware of all the advantages they offered.
An average Spanish person's education has changed a lot in the last 30 years.
The Expo in Seville, the Olympics in Barcelona, IKEA, recently built museums, international student programs
All this enables the average person to be aware of contemporary spaces,
and helps them to accept the idea of making them theirs
The cabins start to fill in the gaps in the frame
The truck, driven by Ricardo, our skillful driver, gets faster
more accurate, and more precise as assembly progresses.
The students see how their drawings and intuitions take shape in a material construction process.
The interiors start to come alive, as light filters through spaces and between panels
And this is a home. 65 sq m for a retired couple. Some things can be changed.
Assembly is moving on fast: in 2 days
the matrix of this building designed for CONSTRUTEC'04 at IFEMA, is filled in.
The homes begin to take shape
The process became a question of movement and rhythm in space.
Depending on the way the apartment is equipped
it can adapt to the users different needs.
Occupants live in diaphanous and light spaces
…. the sides the cabins leave regulate light and energy
The robot forms part of the construction
The building begins to appear before our eyes
From the point of view of sustainability,
this type of construction is completely valid
all the components can be recycled or re-used
there is no rubble.
The process saves a lot of energy. You can dismantle the whole building without a trace
We took just 7 days to disappear from IFEMA.
