To make travelling easy and convenient
a new electronic ticketing system is being introduced
across greater Sydney.
Your entry into this new customer experience is the Opal Card.
It is a smart card.
That will mean no more queuing for your ticket
and the end of multiple paper tickets
Plus you only pay for the travel you use.
Delivering this new ticketing system across ferries, trains and buses
is a complex and huge project.
We are implementing a proven technology
to ensure the system is reliable
and secure.
In Greater Sydney, each year, people
take 530 million journeys across our public transport
networks.
All using ferries from our 42 wharfs,
buses on 3300 routes and trains from 307 stations
covering a region of 40,000 square kilometres.
Making sure we get it right,
the Opal Card will be progressively rolled out. Starting with customer trials,
first on Sydney ferries, then trains, then buses.
The Customer trial is the first stage of the rollout enabling customers to provide feedback.
We start with Sydney Ferries because it's a smaller number of services
and passengers.
Lessons learnt from customers will contribute to the rollout
across trains and then buses.
Using the Opal card is easy.
When you start your journey
all you'll need to do is "tap on"
then "tap off" when you finish.
The Opal card reader will determine your fare.
You will be able to "top up" the value on your Opal card
automatically like an E-tag
or at participating retail outlets
over the phone and online.
The Opal Card will change the way you travel across public transport.
Making it more convenient and easy.
The Opal Card journey
is beginning.
