I'm the 24 Hour Engineer. I build things.
I'd seen a neat idea where people had taken inexpensive skateboards and converted them to faux longboards by putting new longboard
trucks on the very ends. These are called shlongboards and they're
interesting to me because it's easy to get the parts cheaply.
Now this is my shlongboard. It's just a cheap department store deck. Inexpensive hybrid
trucks. Clearance bin wheels and homemade risers.
The whole thing cost me less than fifty dollars. Normally, cheap skateboards like this from
a department store are not flexible and that makes them difficult to ride and not to mention
less comfortable. When the trucks are further away from each
other the flexibility of the board is put to the test and a cheap skateboard can pose
as a respectable longboard. When I put the trucks on the deck they were
mounted at this angle because of the kicktail. This caused the board to sit nice and low,
which I liked, but it made the board difficult to turn because the trucks weren't sitting
level anymore. Sometimes this is a good thing and some skaters
intentionally do this on their boards. I wanted something that was more maneurverable
because I wasn't going for high speed so I built wood risers on the radial arm saw. That's
these wedge-shaped wood pieces here. Now you can order angled risers or find them
in a store but the ones I found weren't steep enough.
All in all this is a fun board to ride because of its flexibility and kind of because of
its disposability. I don't have any sentimental attachment to
this deck and I could replace it in a few hours with nothing but a drill and some hand tools
tools.
