Hello. Welcome to Total Film Obsession’s list of the Top Sci-Fi Movies of all time.
Let’s begin with Number 10. James Cameron's epic film Avatar. The film broke multiple
box office records and became the highest-grossing film of all time taking in more than 9 billion
dollars. It was also the top-selling Blu-ray of all time and was nominated for nine Academy
Awards. Number 9. Inception. Written, co-produced,
and directed by Christopher Nolan. Inception stars Leonardo Dicaprio as a corporate spy
who infiltrates the subconscious of opposing company's executives, and implants thoughts
into their sub conscience. Filmed in six countries, and four continents, the film won 4 academy
awards and was nominated for four more. Number 8. District 9. The 2009 Independent
South African film directed by Neill Blomkamp The film shows how a future South African
government deals with the arrival of an alien race.
They confine the aliens to District 9, a government run camp located outside of Johannesburg.
The film received critical acclaim and was nominated for many awards including, 4 Academy
Awards, Seven British Academy Awards five Broadcast Film Critics Awards, and, One
Golden Globe Nomination. Number 7. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The
concept for E.T. was based on an imaginary friend Steven Spielberg created after his
parents' divorce. The story of a boy who befriends an alien,
and helps him return home, became one of the most popular films of all time.
E.T. beat out Star Wars to become the highest grossing film of all time, for 10 years, until
it was beaten by Jurassic Park. There was a possible sequel that would have
seen Elliott and his friends kidnapped by evil aliens, with ET rescuing them.
Spielberg decided against pursuing the sequel, feeling it would, quote, "do nothing but rob
the original of its virginity" Number 6. The Matrix. The Matrix is a philosophical,
cyberpunk film, known for its visual effects. The film depicts a simulated reality called
the Matrix, created to control the human population, in order to use their bodies as an energy
source. Written and directed by the Wachowski Brothers,
the film popularized the bullet time visual effect,
where a scene moves in slow motion while the camera moves through the scene in real time.
Well received by critics and fans alike, the film grossed over 460 million dollars and
won 4 Academy awards. There were 2 sequels, both written and directed
by the Wachowski Brothers, as well as comic books, video games and animated
short films.
5. Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Kahn. After a lukewarm response for Star Trek: The Motion
Picture, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was forced
out of production for Wrath of Kahn. Released in 1982, it was a box office success,
with positive critical reviews. The film is considered to be the best film
of the Star Trek series, and is credited with the creation of substantial
renewed interest in the franchise.
Number 4. The Terminator. Released in 1984, The Terminator, started the Terminator franchise.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, plays the Terminator, sent back in time by Skynet to kill Sarah
Conner, and pre-emptively prevent John Conner, from starting the resistance and saving humanity.
The film has spawned 3 sequels, two television shows, multiple video games, books, graphic
novels and comics, as well as introducing the general
public to the time paradox.
Number 3. Alien. Directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Tom Skerritt and Sigourney Weaver.
Alien tells the story of the crew of a spaceship stalked by an alien creature.
The iconographic alien designed by Swiss artist H.R. Giger has become one of the biggest science
fiction franchises of all time. spawning 6 sequels and multiple novels, comic
books, video games, and toys.
Number 2. Star Wars. And we mean Star Wars, not this Star Wars Episode 4, A New Hope crap.
It's Star Wars Damnit! Nuff said. The film is a world-wide pop culture phenomenon.
Sequels, cartoons, radio adaptations, comic books, theme park rides, toys
bed sheets, you name it, Star wars is a part of American Life.
In 2013, Star Wars was translated into Navajo, making it the first major motion picture translated
into any Native American language.
and the number one sci-fi movie of all time is.... Blade Runner.
Blade Runner is a dystopian science fiction thriller film directed by Ridley Scott, and
starring Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer. Loosely based on the novel, "Do Androids Dream
of Electric Sheep?", by Philip K. ***, bringing his work to the attention of Hollywood.
The film originally performed poorly, but has since become a cult favorite, and is one
of the first neo-noir genre films. Blade Runner, while popular, polarizes science
fiction fans and critics alike. There have been 7 different versions released
on video, with the last being the "Final Cut", released by Ridley Scott in 2007.
