On our first interview program
we are going to Madame Chocolat
a lovely shop located near Arc de Triomf, in Barcelona.
A place, where fashion and culture meet
in order to make dream lots of hearts of the city.
Here, we will talk with Magda, one of the owners.
Besides the shop, located at paseo de San Joan number 7
you can find a Madame Chocolat stand on most of the Japanese culture events all around the country.
Tell us Magda, where did the idea of call the shop like this?
Well, in fact it's a strange history because
Madame Chocolat was a mix
of my own nick-name: Madeleine de Chocolat
and I wanted to use this name as my clothes brand
then we decided to open the shop, and we were thinking on the name
and we recovered the name Madeleine de Chocolat, but we thought that
use a personal and such a long name
wasn't good at all to the shop (at least it wasn't my brand)
it was for multi-brand clothes
so we decided that Madame Chocolat
really defines lolita because its composed by the treatment of a Victorian lady (Madame)
and "chocolate" that it's something sweet and cute.
Why did you open this shop in Barcelona?
Well, obviously we are from Barcelona so open it here was easy for us
moreover we could see that the alternative movement
was growing, not only lolitas, if not with
muchos more gothics, at that time emos,
a little bit of everything, visual-kei, so we decided
that that was a good moment to star, in a physical way,
to develop a little more the aesthetic.
What can we find if we visit Madame Chocolat?
Well, as i said before, there are a variety of style
since lolita, gothic, visual kei, decora
and a variety of brands since Japanese brand or English...
so we have to have a variety of prices, in such a way that
one person could buy a lolita outfit with 30 euros or spend 300 if she wants
and have all brands from Baby or Angelic Pretty, replicas, or any other style she wants.
Do you also have national designers?
we also have designers like Fidel David, Narcissique, Indrolita...
thay give an European view to the Japanese style
and that's something that is really valued here, they try to adapt lolita with the things we like.
A part of the shop, Madame Chocolat has a hall called Alice Room, isn't it?
Exactly, we have a 60 m basement
where we can do different kind of events related with what we sell.
What kind of events do you use to have?
For example, we have done new/alternative designers markets
people who does accessories
we also had exhibitions
films, dolls expositions
a little bit of everything, really it is a place that is open to more ideas and every time that appears a new project
we talk about if we can do it or not, and we have done lots of events with others ideas: like a fairy event
an other Steampunk and we try to do all we can on this space.
Well, so, thanks you very much for open the shop doors to Lolita in Wonderland.
Thanks you too.
